Grateful to have Vanshika Keshwani (UniPD) and Sabina Bercovich Szulmajster (CED) visiting @sociologyoxford.bsky.social and @nuffieldcollege.bsky.social for their PhDs. Vanshika works on mobility in Venice with e-sharing data; Sabina explores sexuality via dating apps. Learning a lot from both!

We kicked off the @sociologyoxford.bsky.social departmental seminar series with the enthusiasm of Grace Chang @gczching.bsky.social, who presented on time-use patterns in adolescence. Her talk featured research from her PhD + findings from the GenTime projects led by Prof. @manyeekan.bsky.social.

Users primarily download these apps for tracking menstrual cycles (61%), achieving pregnancy (22%), engaging with a community (9%), and avoiding pregnancy (8%). Interestingly, low-income countries with higher fertility rates see more downloads relative to internet access levels.

We found that Clue, Flo, and Period Tracker dominate the market with 250M+ downloads. While usage is highest in high-income countries, low-income areas with unmet family planning needs also show significant engagement, particularly in South America.
