Thinking about Renato Cialente, who passed away #otd in 1943 after being run over by a German military vehicle when leaving the Teatro Argentina in Rome.
Had to bring him some flowers last week, when I paid the Cimitero del Verano a visit.

« […] il nostro amore per il teatro e la certezza che insieme avremmo potuto superare molti ostacoli ci tenne vicini molti anni. La nostra unione artistica fu distrutta dalla sua morte. L'ultima grande cosa che abbiamo recitato insieme è stata ‹La piccola città›». (Elsa Merlini, Tempo, 1956)

The Library of Congress digitizing a bunch of early twentieth-century film magazines did suck me in a bit, and so I just found a new favorite Pola Negri portrait taken by Melbourne Spurr (Picture-Play, July 1926).

Vilma Degischer modeling a Benger bathing suit described as being made from white wool with a trendy color pattern. Published in Moderne Welt in summer of 1928 and taken by female photographer of Jewish origin, Pepa Feldscharek, who ran her own studio in Vienna at the time.

Rewatched L‘ultimo ballo in which Elsa Merlini plays a dual role and forgot there was an actual shot with both her characters on screen together. Fascinating to see, and how smoothly it was put together too.

“Vilma Degischer doesn’t need the spot- & limelight to make a character or situation be understood. And it doesn’t need the costume or make-up to feel the person she brings to life. She is open and free and draws from all that is human kind.“
