Given that fetish gear was considered ‘tame’ compared to the adult films and sex toys that required an 18+ ID check to ascend the stairs to browse amongst, they were still on the ground floor when they came to a stop beside a wall displaying a veritable cornucopia of fetish gear. Everything the sex store had available for wearing on one’s body stretched before them, from bright red fishnet stockings to nipple clamps to collars in every color and with every type of accent, spikes to rhinestones. As Lysander stepped towards a few racks bearing a variety of nipple pasties and pulled off some pink heart-shaped ones tipped with matching tassels to look at consideringly, Theo slid a step closer to hiss at him, “You b-better not be thinking of w-wearing those on stage.” Lysander only looked innocently at him before bursting into a chuckle and dutifully putting the pasties back, though he grabbed a pair of sheer black hose with little bow-shaped embroidery spaced intermittently right after. Holding it up alongside his white-jean-clad thigh, he asked brightly, “What do you think?” Theo actually was a little curious what his big, buff boyfriend would look like if he pushed gender norms that far to the extreme, but he only snorted and replied, “As if they would f-fit.” “Hmm. True.” Sounding vaguely disappointed, Lysander replaced the hose on its rack then at last stepped back to consider the collars, hands back in his pockets as he stood perfectly at ease. Juniper, for her part, was hovering nearby, looking like the stereotypical overly helpful store clerk, except for her vibrant grin that radiated amused excitement. Then Theo realized he was being put in the spot as once again his boyfriend and his DJ friend both fixed their stares on him and Lysander prompted, “Well, master? Which collar do you think would suit me?” Feeling his cheeks turn crimson, Theo muttered a few swear words under his breath, and, violating his own edict not to draw attention to themselves, retaliated by elbowing his boyfriend rather hard in the side the same time that he hissed, “Shut up!!” Lysander grimaced and flinched away, but chuckled right after, grabbing Theo by the wrist to prevent further injury as he said apologetically to Juniper, “Sorry, he gets shy when we talk about fetish gear in public.”

Thank god for poor Matt, who had no idea he was all that kept World War 3 from breaking out in the back seat of his Toyota hybrid. All the long way back to their apartment, Siti kept up her air of civility, asking Matt how his night was going, how long he’d been working as a rideshare driver, if he had a partner and kids, and so on. Theo stayed silent, partly from exhaustion and partly because he was struggling to think of anything he might say in his defense when she did finally unleash on him. “Sorry, I thought it’d be enn-bee-dee that I never told you I was signing a contract to collaborate with a massive celebrity we already decided we hated when we briefly saw him a month ago” hardly seemed like it would work. The middle-aged man almost blushed at that, thanking her with a big smile before he drove off, leaving them on the street just outside of their apartment complex. Then, at last, she rounded on Theo, and her eyes were blazing. “Why,” she began, spitting each word like a dragon breathing fire, “Didn’t you tell me?” “I…” Theo faltered, cringing as he cast a brief glance about themselves, as if anyone passing through Los Angeles would really care if a goth/emo/??? Asian guy and furious Indian-American girl were arguing on the sidewalk. “I d-didn’t…I was a-afraid you’d…” “What? Disapprove of you associating with him?” Siti scoffed, folding her arms as she rolled her eyes dramatically. “Yeah, probably. But can you blame me? You never told me Lysander Delion was cool!” He blinked at that, although a small part of him wanted to hiss at her not to say the celebrity’s name aloud as if it might summon a horde of fangirls to pester them for Lysander’s address. “He’s…c-cool?” “Yeah!” Siti shook her head at him as if he’d said something nonsensical. “He’s nothing like the tabloids make him seem…I mean, I guess that’s to be expected, but still. I know we were, let’s say, not nice when we first saw him at Halo, but obviously something changed your opinion of him since then or you wouldn’t have agreed to go to his apartment in the first place, and I guess I’m just…I’m hurt that you think I’d be so judgmental that I’d be unwilling to give him a second chance.” That was it, actually—at least, the bulk of why he hadn’t told her. Because despite his best intentions, he was coming to like Lysander, and Theo wanted his best friend to like him too.

Hesitantly, afraid that he might be misinterpreting his lover’s emotions, seeing negativity where there was none, nonetheless he had to ask softly, “Are you…nervous?” Then, the weight of the tiny microphone laying heavy in his pocket, he offered quietly, “D’you want your ch-charm back?” “What? No, no. I told you, you keep it.” Lysander pulled back slightly at that, but only far enough to rest his palms on the wall to either side of Theo’s head, once more pinning him in place, albeit without making any sort of direct contact so long as Theo kept his back flush with the wall. “And…nervous? …Yeah, I guess I kinda am.” His lover’s lips twisted into an ironic, almost rueful smile, as if he were admitting something embarrassing. “Weird, isn’t it? I can perform on television in front of millions and barely feel anything, but if I sang for you right here in the room, just the two of us, I’d be as nervous as I’m about to be on that stage a hundred feet away.” Theo wasn’t sure what to say to that—how to interpret it. Was it…Theo making him nervous, all of a sudden? Had it been a terrible decision to come to his show after all? “D-don’t be nervous,” he found himself stammering softly, reaching up to—carefully—touch his lover’s glammed up face. Lysander’s smile had turned facile, his emerald eyes the only indicators of how he really felt. “You’re…you’re g-gonna be perfect. You’re always p-perfect. On stage, I mean. And e-even if you weren’t…” Cautious though he was of messing up Lysander’s makeup, Theo leaned ever so slightly forward, closing the handful of inches that remained between them to lightly brush his lips against his lover’s. “I’ll still l-love you no matter what.”

He did not, as it turned out, have an easier time deciding in the morning. In fact, he deliberated so long that a week passed, and still the emailed contract remained “unread” in his inbox. He was getting close to just ignoring it outright—deciding that it wasn’t worth the risk of finding out that Lysander was dangerously unhinged even if this was an incredible opportunity—when, one misty afternoon during the bus ride home after a shift at the warehouse, a DM from an unfamiliar brown-haired woman in Utah popped up on Friendlink. hi! the DM read with an irritating lack of spelling and capitalization that confirmed the sender’s idiocy. its lys! ths is my fake acct. sry, u didnt give me ur number and u didnt reply 2 my email, so this iz the best i got. hope its not creepy! u get a chance 2 read the contract yet? Shit—it wasn’t a strange woman in Utah, it was a strange celebrity right there in LA. Theo tried not to hiccup in shock, casting a brief paranoid glance about himself as if any of the other passengers on the bus might glance over and realize he was chatting with the Lysander Delion. Debating whether to respond or simply block him as he’d mostly been planning to do already, Theo decided to go with the less mean option, at least until Lysander confirmed his creep status. Hi. No, sorry. Been busy working. There—simple and to the point. And not a lie…mostly. ah, np. i get it. Theo doubted very much that the spoiled nepobaby knew what it was like to work multiple jobs in a day—but then he supposed spending weeks and weeks on tour couldn’t be all that easy, either. A second later, Lysander sent another DM. n e wayz, we didnt rly get 2 talk in the car. can I see u in person soon? or talk on the phone…but u’d have 2 give me ur # first ;p Talk on the phone with Lysander…or worse yet, see him in person again. Theo swallowed, intimidated by both options. He couldn’t think of a proper response, and anyway his stop had almost arrived. I’ll think about it. I need to get off the bus, he typed instead of choosing either option, then shoved the phone into his pocket and made for the exit without checking for a reply.

Okay, this was getting into freak behavior. “A-are you s-stalking me?” he demanded outright, earning a startled laugh from the incognito celebrity. “What? No—no, of course not! Maybe I like this kind of music and I just happened to attend a set you’re DJing at, hmm?” Lysander chuckled, arching his brows teasingly. Considering the pop prince didn’t even know the difference between darkwave and dubstep, Theo doubted that very much. At his flat stare, Lysander laughed uncomfortably then admitted, “No, I…after we met at my show, I was...curious about you, so I hunted around a bit on Friendlink and saw your music profile had ‘liked’ Halo’s page, and well, you’d posted about tonight’s show to your DJ page, I happened to have the night free, and so…here I am.” Page one preview-part two: The wariness only intensified, hardly reassured this wasn’t stalker behavior. “You don’t even l-like EDM,” he accused, sure of this fact by the pop singer’s ignorance of subgenres. The amused look in the celebrity’s eyes slowly faded at that, replaced with a look of vague irritation. “Maybe I do,” he protested, sounding more than a little offended. “Maybe you don’t know the first thing about me, Theo.” Blanching slightly at the overly familiar use of his name, Theo didn’t bother to hide his scowl. Sure he did—well, knew what tidbits he’d osmosified about the celebrity through magazine covers he’d glanced at in the grocery store checkout line and gossip on talk radio he’d overheard on the bus, at least. Then again, tabloids were infamously exaggerated when they weren’t outright lies, constantly claiming pregnancies and break-ups and psychiatric collapses and other scandals based on spurious evidence at best. Page one preview-part three: Feeling slightly guilty for casting aspersions he really didn’t have the basis for, Theo indicated the entrance to the venue with a thrust of his chin and started to lug his board towards it, not wanting to get stuck in the audience before it grew even more crowded as the hours ticked on. He didn’t look back to see if Lysander followed, but once he’d made it out of the entrance—he’d get paid online sometime in the next few days, so he didn’t need to speak to the surly ticket counter girl again—Theo pulled round the corner towards an alley then finally turned to face his possibly-a-stalker who had indeed trailed behind him. Pulling his mask down once there weren’t as many people nearby to recognize him, Lysander bathed him in the same radiant smile he’d shown towards Theo the first time their eyes had met at Halo. “I’m really not a stalker,” he said again, which was exactly what a stalker would say. “No, truthfully—I just wanted to hear how you sounded live before I came to you with my business proposition.” “B-business proposition?” Theo echoed, intrigued despite his cautiousness. “Yeah.” Emerald eyes sparkling in the glaring light of a street lamp, Lysander Delion announced to him, “I wanna make music with you.”

first page preview: An hour later, the concert was in full swing. Swarms of attendees ranging in age from eight to sixty covered every inch of floor space, though most of them were in their teens. The stage itself was awash in a dizzying display of lights in multiple hues, the network of LED light strips stretched over the back of the stage depicting geometric shapes that flexed and pulsed in time with the music blasting towards the audience from the enormous speakers on stands just beyond the edge of the stage. Lysander was in the middle of all the lights and glamour, the rhinestones on his pink-and-white outfit almost blinding as they flashed in the chaotic illumination. Theo was far enough away that he couldn’t make out all of the singer’s facial features, but Lysander’s grin was obvious even from the back of the room, flashing whenever he wasn’t belting out an impressive range of octaves. Through every song, the musician’s fingers danced across the strings of his guitar, melding with the music from the background performers and his own lyrics into a perfectly designed cohesive whole. He was made for this. Though from a technical standpoint Theo could see the craft behind the arrangement, he still couldn’t say he liked the music—it was nothing he’d ever load up on a song-playing app or look for an online video playlist to jam to while cleaning house or riding the bus for the hour it took to get back to the tiny apartment he shared with Siti halfway out towards Pasadena. Still, even he had to admit to the magnetic energy that radiated from Lysander, drawing in the gaze of every onlooker like planets orbiting a sun. And, if he was being very honest with himself, Lysander was hot as hell, even in all his pink feathers and sparkles—but only in that plastic airbrushed “Hollywood ideal” kind of way. Not like the dark and broody boys that usually caught Theo’s attention while DJing at a rave. Another hour passed, exceeding the time the concert was supposed to have ended by more than twenty minutes, but the crowd was still going just as wild as they had been at the beginning of the set. Surely Lysander must have been getting tired by then, but he was too much of a consummate professional to show it—still jamming and singing on stage with his glowing smile and irrepressible energy undimmed. As he reached the end of what was supposed to have been his last song, the singer grabbed the mic to address the crowd, who fell into hushed silence once Lysander began speaking as if they’d suddenly stepped foot into a church. “I’m afraid our time has come to an end, my friends,” the singer purred into the mic, sounding at least slightly breathless. The crowd cried out their displeasure at that fact—a few girls even started outright sobbing. Lysander swept them all with a remorseful smile, the guitar hanging about his neck and shoulder by the strap as he emotively pressed a hand over his rhinestoned heart. “I know, I know. I’m devastated by it, too. But—you’ve been such a wonderful crowd, let’s throw in one more song. Yeah? Shall we do one more?”
