Finish sanding using my new Quark wheel and Diamond core sandpaper. Exterior of the piece is fully vitrified (0%) absorption unglazed porcelain. The sanded finish is a unique tactile experience.

My first attempt at a saké sipper / ring bowl shape. I’m trimming the foot is surprisingly the hardest part since the inside is smaller than my smallest trimming tool.

New garlic roaster design. This one is more angular to match my other pieces, and has a more abstract arrangement of the steam vents in the lid. The step in the base serves as a handle allowing the piece to be lifted while wearing oven mitts.

Last two kind firings lined up my workbench. My glaze experiments did not work but everything else turned out good. Now I just have to sand. All. Of. It. 😫

I use tape to get clean glaze lines around rims and handles. It also serves as a spout to pour excess glaze back into the bucket.

Sometimes I drink coffee while sanding pots but I have to be careful not to drink a cup full of sanding sludge by accident

I’m all set up at the Milford Art Affaire on Main Street. We’ll be here all day with almost 150 artists. If you’re looking for something to do in the Cincinnati area today then come check it out!

Here are some progress pics of my new garlic roaster design. See the finished pieces in person this Saturday at the Milford Art Affaire. As usual these are made from Blackice porcelain.

Continuing the glaze experiments: here are the two new bases on the left with added stain and zircopax on the right. Sadly both still pinhole.

The top one I am concerned that the extra cloudiness is un-melted alumina hydrate which means it’s chemistry is not what it should be so it’s out.

Trying out a new garlic roaster shape. This one is more angular in keeping with the rest of my work, but pays homage to my original design.

I throw this in 3 pieces: the base, the main body of the lid, and the top handle.

Continuing the glaze tests, these are two alternate bases that I will try to use with the red encapsulated stain from my previous experiment. These are reformulated for lower LOI and potentially higher movement to help with the pinholing from the stain.

All set up in Cincinnati / East Walnut Hills for my first show of the year!

Another vase, this one in my usual cobalt glaze and a white slip inlay.

Sometimes I wonder if my style is too one-note but I’m the kind of person who listens to the same song for a month and having that come through in my pottery feels natural.

I’ll call this another glaze experiment but I didn’t actually change the glaze since the last experiment I just thought it would look nice on this vase.

A small conical black porcelain bud vase with a white slip band around the center where a mocha-diffusion pattern is applied. The tip and interior of the vase are glazed in blue.

New glaze experiment. I want this one to be a bit darker and more vibrant, and I am still chasing a bubbling/pinholing issue, but it’s getting close. This is the same glaze on both pieces so I can see what it looks like on light and dark clay.

I love trimming marbled pieces because removing the layer of blurry slip to reveal the crisp pattern underneath is incredibly satisfying. Like unwrapping a present.

Nice throwing session last night making more marbled shot glasses. Despite their small size (only 5oz of clay) I throw these individually because I’m terrible at throwing off the hump. The marbling will be more striking once the outer slip is trimmed off tomorrow.

Set of porcelain soup-mugs in progress. These will be dried slowly over the course of about 14 days in my enclosed shelf prior to their first firing.

Serving up some reclaim! I procrastinated this batch for way too long so it almost filled up my bucket.

A black porcelain cup with white slip inlay and extruded handle. The white inlay is slip made from the failed handles of other mugs like this one.
