Day 31 - SPORTS

As the final day arrives, it seems that BEASTOBER has come to an end. A month of spooky shenanigans, a month of startling scenarios, a month of little monsters hitting the ball. But though BEASTOBER may soon be behind us, one thing will remain: the joy of Beastieball, of teamwork, of cooperation, companionship, competitive spirit, team spirit; the unbridled joy and community of SPORTS. A thing not to be taken for granted, for it is what brings us together in these turbulent times and spins the world on.

Day 30 - Alien

The Rutile Halloween party is starting soon, and you’re miles away and running late! You dash through the Mythwood forest desperate to get there on time, but it’s completely hopeless. Until an Albrax descends from the sky in front of you, holding a large note in its claws. “Rutile Halloween party rapid transit,” it reads, and the Albrax gives you a delighted smile. You sigh heavily, unprepared for this adventure, but willing to take it anyway. If you were going to be abducted by an alien, it might as well be on Halloween for transport to a party, right?

Day 29 - Crash

Jack and the Sports King flew across the night sky over Rutile. After the Sports King barged into the Halloween party uninvited, there was only one solution: Force him to participate in a rocket boots race against Jack. “wow dude, you suck at this!!” Jack taunted as he trailed behind them. “yeah, ok, sure,” the King responded. “big words coming from the loser in an asinine costume who got banned from the league” Jack simply shook their head. “dude, projection much?? your outfit SUCKS!! and you literally got overthrown and removed as league chairman by the ENTIRE world!!! also watch out for that tree” The King whipped his head forward. “wh-” He crashed into the tall tree in front of them as Jack flew past, and slowly slid to the ground. “i hate all of you” he groaned.

Day 28 - Bat

Your midnight excursion has led you to a small abandoned building on the outskirts of Geo City. Flashlight in hand, you test the door to find that it’s unlocked, and carefully creep inside to see what you’ll find. You immediately hear some eerie chittering echoing through the room, and slowly sweep your flashlight to the ceiling. About a hundred Jellibat stare back at you, hanging from the ceiling, smiling cutely. Your flashlight refracts through them and bathes the whole room in yellow and pink light.

day 27 - game

No one could have expected Jack and the Mega Beasts to make a surprise appearance at the Rutile Halloween party, but there they were, striking poses on the court in various costumes. “Jack!!” Vilma yelled, “Say it!!” Karma pumped up her fist and chimed in. “Say the line, Jack!!” Jack chuckled. “you all sure know what you like, don’t you?~” They and their Beasties did a little twirl and all struck a pose. “hey nerds, guess what?!?! beastieball is more than a game!!!!” The crowd cheered and applauded raucously.

Day 26 - Counter

Reese, Jeremy, and Jared stood alone on the grass in Rollback Loop. “Alright, you two,” Reese shouted confidently, a ball shroom in hand. “Ready to practice our Counter technique?” They both responded in equal confidence. “Alright, here goes…” Reese threw the ball to Jeremy, who bumped it to Jared, who set it back to Jeremy, and Jeremy smashed the ball forward at rocket speed. Reese gasped and quickly ducked as the ball flew over him, directly into a window of a building behind them. He winced upon hearing glass shattering, but his expression turned around after hearing the voice that yelled out in frustration. “you stupid beasties!! ur gonna pay for that once i get my administrative power back!” Reese exhaled with a slight smile. “Well, could be worse.”

Day 25 - Detective

“Don’t panic, people! Detective Riley is on the case! …I know that’s not what my costume is, but I’m a detective, I swear!” She took a confident step forward and held up a finger. “Now, here’s what we know: No one present at this party has claimed authorship of the first-place jack-o-lantern in the contest.” She narrowed her eyes and gazed around the room. “That means SOMEONE here is… um…” She trailed off and her eyes widened as she noticed Jared, Reese’s Trat, in the center of the room, with a carving knife taped to their can. “I… Reese, did you give them that knife?” Reese grinned. “Nope.”

Day 24 - Serve

The guests of the Halloween party were treated to a most hospitable way of being served refreshments: A Servitt wandering the venue with a big tray of foodstuffs held over their head. They’d volunteered for the job, and couldn’t have been happier doing it. It even earned them a few headpats and chin scratches here and there! Turns out that sometimes, Servitts are great at serving more than just a ball on a court.

Day 23 - Block

Riven thought taking her laptop to the Solanum Weald might give her some writing inspiration and help with her writer’s block. She was wrong. After staring blankly at her screen, backdropped by the trees and mist, for hours on end, she threw her hands in the air and exclaimed, “Oh my god, can I go one day without feeling blocked?!” Immediately, a Goofsder leaped out of the bushes and landed in front of her, followed by several Webbounce. And then they began twirling around in turn, striking various poses. Riven tilted her head in bewilderment for a moment, but then started to piece things together. “Are you… trying to use Trait Dance?” Her face turned to a smile and she chuckled. “I don’t think that’s how that works, but I really appreciate the effort.” Then her eyes widened. “Beasties… using Trait Dance… to prevent someone feeling blocked? THAT’S A GOOD PLOT POINT!” She promptly returned to her laptop and got to typing.

Day 22 - Net

A young Bildit alone on the court hit ball after ball to the other side, only for every single one to hit the net. They sighed in resignation and were ready to give up. But then they heard an encouraging shout behind them, and turned around to see a Bandicraft standing at the edge of the court. They walked over and gave a reassuring nod. After hesitating for a moment, the Bildit took another ball, bumped it into the air, and then the Bandicraft immediately lifted them into the air. They spiked the ball as hard as they could on its way down, and it sailed over the net. They shared a proud cheer.

Day 21 - Slime

An unfortunate predicament: Celia insisted on using a fountain pen, but had just run out of ink while writing an important paper. After pondering their dilemma for a few moments, their Illugus Psilo tapped them on the shoulder and presented their tail with a crafty smile. Celia was puzzled for a moment, but then had an epiphany: they carefully let the slimy ink dripping from Psilo’s tail drip onto their pen, and then attempted to write with it. “It… works?” they remarked in slight disbelief. “Well, I may need to add an extra page onto this paper.”

Day 20 - Werewolf

Riley sat on her favorite rock in the preserve and howled at the full moon. She was a free wolf, and sometimes that meant taking a break from society to be herself for a while. Her howling was interrupted by a yelp when she turned her head to the side and saw Ace standing a few feet away. “Uh… what’re you up to out here, Riley?” they inquired as she blushed a bit. “Look,” she replied, “it’s common knowledge that 95% of trans girls are werewolves, so that probably includes me. Sometimes you’ve got to stay in character, y’know?” Ace smiled in a slightly weirded out but endearing way. “You know what, I can’t argue with that.” They stayed silent for a few moments, then looked around to make sure no one was watching. “...Can I join?”

Day 19 - Magic

“Callisto! You know magic, right? Can you cast a spell on me that will make me good at Beastieball?” Callisto gave Kaz a delighted smile. “Oh, absolutely! Just close your eyes.” Kaz clenched his fists in triumph and closed his eyes. “Now, with my vast magical powers, I will transform you into a Proteos.” Kaz’s eyes jolted open. “WHUH?! Don’t do that! I said I wanted to be a good Beastieball coach!” Callisto tilted her staff down and looked at him craftily. “Hm, that’s funny. I thought you said you wanted to be good at playing Beastieball. But it sounds like you actually want to be good at coaching Beastieball. I don’t have any magic that can do that, unfortunately.” Kaz lowered his head in defeat. “Oh… dang it…” Then his face turned wide-eyed again. “Wait… so you DO have magic that can turn me into a Proteos??” Callisto chuckled playfully.

Day 18 - Ghost

Your night has been strangely restless. You turn over and get a view of your room, moonlight trickling through the windows, and your heart jumps. In the middle of your room is your Psylusc, dead frozen, eyes wide open. You don’t dare to move. After many minutes pass, they slowly lower their head and close their eyes. Then they turn to you and open them again just a bit, giving you a solemn stare.

Day 17 - Moon

A Humflit gazed at the October moon. It shone down brilliantly, as the night air provided solace from the sun. They’d spent their entire life as a vagabond, drifting ceaselessly from meadow to meadow. And they hated it. They wished to abandon these shackles, to live a life untethered by the land they lived in, to shed their wings and expand their horizons beyond this stifling gulch. They looked to the moon and vowed to grow.

Day 16 - Sun

A Humflit gazed at the October sun. It beamed down gently, providing solace from the cold day air. They’d spent their entire life as a vagabond, drifting ceaselessly from meadow to meadow. And they cherished it. They did not want it to end. They wished to give back to the land even further, to grow their wings and expand their horizons beyond this cozy gulch. They looked to the sun and vowed to grow.

“CELIA!! CELIA!! THERE’S MOLD!!” Reese rushed excitedly to the back corner of the BRS building, after spotting a small colony of mold growing at the base of the wall. “Oh, that’s not good,” Celia remarked. “Guess I need to break out the dehumidifier.” Reese kneeled down to inspect the mold. “Not before I take some samples of this! I need to find out what species it is! Maybe I’ll even try to germinate my own colony! And maybe I’ll even-” Celia’s eyes widened behind their glasses. “Reese. Please don’t eat the mold.” He narrowed his eyes in response. “Celia. That’s not what I was going to say.” He paused for a long time. “…Probably.”

Day 14 - Whistle

Sunset on Gamboge is a lovely time for a walk, especially on a chilly October night. Marcy sauntered along the coast, whistling a sea shanty her parents had taught her. Her Gullit, Hootenanny, stood on her shoulder, whistling along in harmony. On the court, they’re squawky and loud, but on a nice evening like this, sometimes they like to bring down the volume a bit.

“I was walking through Domain Park on that dire night, when I encountered a man. He was just standing there, staring into the distance. I approached him, and his face turned to horror. ’Stay back!’ he yelled, shaking. ‘Can’t you see them? Behind you! A horde of faceless men!’” Kaz shrieked and dove into the bushes. Everyone else around the campfire stared at Elena in either confusion or slight amusement. “Elena,” Riven remarked, “that wasn’t scary at all. And you definitely stole that from a video game.”

Then they leap up and sink their teeth into your arm! …Okay, not really; their fangs aren’t sharp enough. But it seems they’re taking the occasion to cosplay as a vampire bat, and they’re doing their best.

As a high-ranking team, we find ourselves traveling all over the world, and sometimes my Beasties and I get a bit hungry when we're in the middle of nowhere. Day 10 - Ultimate

Marlin approached the doors to the Beastieball center with an exhausted groan, as another massive crashing noise erupted from behind the doors. He just wanted to get some sleep after the Halloween party, but it seemed some partygoers decided to stay until 4 AM and start causing a racket. He threw open the doors to the stadium and prepared to admonish whoever was responsible. Instead, his eyes widened as he found his Yamyth and Ace’s Shloom on the court, spiking Ultimate Attacks at each other repeatedly, competitive grins on their faces. Apparently even the god of sports was not above forming rivalries.

Day 9 - Sweat

Taking a walk through the Solanum Weald on Halloween night is not the best course of action for one’s nerves. You’ll often find yourself freezing in your tracks and breaking into a cold sweat. Sometimes from spotting the shadow of a Webbounce, skittering across your path from bush to bush. Sometimes from hearing the eerie calls of Yueffowl echoing through the trees. And sometimes from your Rookee expressing their dissatisfaction with having to follow you through this place, using some words they learned from your friend. That may be the worst of the three, actually.

Day 8 - Ready

In the shadows of the glade, a Sprecko’s soft footsteps rustled the fallen leaves. The Halloween Bigmoon hung low in the sky as they traipsed to the back of the clearing. There they were. A cluster of inkcaps, bathed in the moon’s light. The Sprecko drew a shaky breath and stepped closer. They’d been putting this off for far too long. Yes, change is terrifying. But they knew this was something they had to do. They knew they were ready now. After taking a moment to ground themself, feel the grass, feel the air, feel the beckoning call they’d ignored for so long, they reached out and laid their hand on the mushrooms.

Day 7 - Set

“Ready…!” The participants of the annual Spooktacular Marathon lined up, humans and Beasties alike all clothed in costume, raring to prove they were the fastest runner. “Set…!” Just then, the Servitt in the middle shot past the starting line over to a nearby cluster of ball shrooms. They grabbed one, threw it into the air, and passionately set it to the referee. It bounced off his head loudly, and his face turned to a scowl. “You don’t even learn Set, Servitt,” he informed the Servitt, who grinned sheepishly.
