Our office seismograph picked up the Kamchatka quake last night. We don’t know why the shaking lasted so long (each horizontal trace is 1 hour, so more than 2 hours of shaking). Any experts around who can explain?

I set up some pyranometers on the roof today. Pyranometers measure the incident radiant energy, in W/m^2. You might use one to determine efficiency of a solar panel (we have lots of those in the roof too). In this case I wanted to compare the measurements of sensors encased in different housings.

Sometimes I need to get readings with different sensors and compare them. In this case, measuring rotation rate two ways.

This first panel of a Chuck Mullin (@charlubby on other social media) comic reminds me of every Friday at 4 PM during my teaching career.
Five stars, no notes.

New personal best deadlift! 175 lbs (~80 kg of mass)
January 9, 2025 at 2:49 AM
Here is a short clip of me lifting up the heaviest weight I have ever lifted up (to my knowledge). I don’t move it very far, but I am proud that I can do it. It is 185 pounds (84 kg of mass). I did two sets of 6 with this weight.

I was doing an Atwood’s machine today at work. I bought a couple different types of string to see if there is a difference. This test was with 0.5 mm linen thread. It was pretty good.
