A beautiful carpet bog in the southwestern Catskills range of New York State. November here provides days of stark colorful contrasts of leatherleaf, tamarack, Sphagnum mosses and the snowy white tufts of Eriophorum virginicum or cotton grass sedge. This peatland is a research site for the NYC DEP.

Sub-adult newly emerged Jefferson salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) from its natal wetland. This location in the Catskills of New York State has pure Jefferson’s in a breeding population. Not unisexual hybrids.

Mosquito fern (Azolla cristata) in the mid-Hudson Valley region of New York State. Although not listed as protected or rare in the state, sightings of it are somewhat uncommon throughout the region. Azolla is within the the Salviniaceae family and they are aquatic ferns.
