We just got back from a trip to Arizona, so I'm introducing our new petrified wood to the homegrown Mississippi stuff. (Not from the National Park! From one of the totally not shady dig your own places just outside the National Park.)
Two pieces of petrified wood. One is red-brown and nearly fills the hand holding it. The second is a large, light yellowish tan piece used as a stepping stone buried in pine straw and grass.

12 years later, one of the culprits got married. We left half full bottles of glitter in both their cars, but were magnanimous enough to not actually do it. (we all drive much nicer cars now than my poor grad school vehicle 🤣)

Reading this book again says some things about what was considered a normal family dynamic around my house.

Hey y'all, don't leave your youngest kid home alone and then blame them for stuff out of their control.
"When Mrs MacGoose got back and saw the mess, she nearly fainted." A bonnet wearing goose drops her purse on shock at the wreckage the weasels left in her store. The family of geese blames the youngest member for the mess, even though he hatched literally one page ago. "So he's to blame!" the speech bubble reads. Signs around the grocery read, our turnips are tops, cream of junebug soup, our tomatoes are good enough to eat, and good spuds.

I have this book! It's the 1978 classic MacGoose's Grocery by Frank Asch & illustrated by James Marshall.

It's the story of a family of geese who run a grocery store, and one by one leave someone else in charge until it's just their egg. Guess who gets blamed for the weasels' mess?
The cover of MacGoose's Grocery, well loved and slightly stained due to generations of small children. Junior inside the egg after he's left in charge. The text reads, "with everyone gone, the baby inside the egg soon got cold." and I'm a speech bubble, the gosling yells, "more heat!" The next page features the gosling in a coat, gloves, and earmuffs. The text reads, "he put on some warm clothes, but he was still cold." No explanation is given for where he got the clothes. "just then some playful weasels entered the store, and seeing no one alone, they decided to have some fun." Two weasels wearing ball caps who look very much like seals enter the grocery store. I am so stoked for lizard season. My 5yo is the best little spotter. This is a "stink" around here, and I'll be sad when the kids all learn to pronounce it correctly.

My closest rock is a pair near my sink - a fossil unearthed behind the Waffle House in Starkville, MS and a mystery specimen brought inside by a small child.
