Maryland man with kids in car tried to ram cops while driving wrong way down I-270: police
A man is facing a long list of charges after authorities say he led deputies on a dangerous wrong-way pursuit that stretched from Frederick to Montgomery County and ended with his arrest on Friday afternoon. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit began around 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, when a deputy spotted a vehicle driving recklessly on southbound U.S. Route 15 near Rosemont Avenue. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Cory Thomas Burkhardt, reportedly crossed the median and continued driving south in the northbound lanes, narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic. Deputies say Burkhardt tried several times to ram patrol cars. Spike strips were deployed twice, but the vehicle kept going, entering I-270 southbound while traveling in the northbound lanes. Near the Clarksburg exit, a deputy used a patrol vehicle to force Burkhardt’s car into a guardrail, bringing the chase to a stop. When deputies approached, Burkhardt refused to get out. Officers used non-lethal weapons to gain compliance as two children, ages 8 and 12, exited the vehicle. Burkhardt then ran from the scene carrying a 2-year-old child, according to deputies. Police said a Taser was deployed to safely secure the child before Burkhardt continued to resist arrest, at one point attempting to disarm a deputy. Deputies took Burkhardt into custody and brought him to Frederick Health Hospital for an emergency evaluation. While deputies were in the process of filing charges, officials say Burkhardt forced his way out of the hospital and ran away. He was quickly caught by Frederick Police officers and returned to the hospital. ## The charges **Burkhardt faces multiple charges, including:** * Two counts of first-degree assault * Four counts of second-degree assault * Disarming a law enforcement officer * Attempting to elude police * Reckless and negligent driving * Driving the wrong way on a divided highway * Failing to properly secure a child in a car seat * Willfully disobeying a police officer’s order Authorities said no deputies, children or members of the public were seriously injured. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation. Burkhardt remained in custody as of Saturday.

Woman accused of stabbing her 79-year-old mother to death at Fairfax County home
A woman accused of stabbing her 79-year-old mother to death at a home in Fairfax County is in jail. The arrest came just two days after the elderly woman was found dead by her caretaker. Helena Little, 31, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, charged with second-degree murder. Investigators say a caretaker arrived at the home of 79-year-old Norma Little in the 2300 block of Dulles Station Boulevard on Tuesday and found her patient unresponsive with stab wounds on her upper body. Court documents say the autopsy indicates the cause of death was homicide via sharp force trauma to the victim’s neck. The documents also state that when police arrived at the scene, there was an overwhelming smell of cleaning products in the apartment. Investigators described the apartment as being in disarray and the victim was reportedly on the floor under an overturned recliner. **READ MORE:****79-year-old woman found stabbed to death in Fairfax County home** The victim had limited mobility and relied on the care of her two adult children — who lived with her — as well as a caretaker for everyday tasks. FOX 5 spoke with a resident who said he saw Helena Little on Tuesday, wearing headphones while walking her dog and reading a book. He says she mostly stayed to herself. "There’s no justification for murder," the neighbor, who only wanted to go by Doug, told FOX 5 "I’m not justifying it, but I can understand how pressures can get on someone. Doug says he frequents this neighborhood, visiting his girlfriend, who is wheelchair-bound. Court documents say video footage, witness statements and key fob activity all indicated that Helena Little left the apartment with a backpack and the family dog and did not return. She is now being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center without bond.

UVA student injured in field-rush urges school to implement new safety measures
A University of Virginia student who was injured when a massive crowd rushed a football field in excitement following the team's double-overtime win against Florida State is urging the school to put more safety measures in place. When UVA defeated Florida State in double overtime back in September, students flung onto the field in excitement, but the celebration quickly turned into chaos, sending dozens to the hospital, including a local girl from McLean. Ellie Wormser is in her third year and UVA and after this frightful incident, she now struggles to balance her daily doctor's appointments with her school load. With football still in season, she’s sharing her story because she doesn’t want anyone else to go through the pain she and so many others did. The student section at UVA is a grass hill and on the night of the big game, it was packed, creating what Wormser described as an avalanche of people. "It all changed so fast. I mean, I was immediately knocked unconscious. I didn’t even have time to process what was happening, cause I was just knocked out right away," Wormser said. At least 19 students were sent to the hospital. "I woke up underneath a pile of unconscious people," she told FOX 5. "I just was screaming in so much pain." The school was fined $50,000 for a first offense under ACC Conference rules, and it could increase up to $200,000 — a stark comparison from other conferences that have tighter polices. The SEC has a flat fine of $500,000. Ellie’s mom, Jen believes stricter policies are warranted on all campuses, especially UVA. "We would love to have a conversation with the universities or the college football league or the conference her college is in to start those discussions," mom Jen Wormser said. "That’s why we’re trying to bring awareness to Ellie’s story so other parents can say to their kids, you know, there’s a lot of dangerous field rushing and it’s happening almost every weekend on college campuses." Wormser suffered multiple injuries and says her life has been overtaken by doctor appointments that have her traveling back and forth between McLean and UVA weekly. "I ended up having a blood clot in my left leg that was specifically crushed the most so that was a DVT in my upper left leg and then a piece broke off and went to my lungs so I had a pulmonary embolism," she said. "I’m in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, light therapy." Her ankle was damaged, she has neuropathy in her leg, which will take a year to heal and what she says is a horrible concussion. Her recovery is extensive. "I’m devastated that this happened to her and it’s changed her changed her life and I want her to on the other side of this go through and know she’s helping other kids," her mother said.

Pittsburg-based developer wants to put casino next to Commanders new stadium in DC
The Washington Commanders are heading back to the District and fans are excited. Developers are putting in their proposals to develop the area surrounding the stadium. Surprisingly, one Pittsburg-based firm is pitching to bring a casino to one of the areas next to the Commanders new home. At an ANC7 neighborhood meeting this week, Chatman Holdings described the casino as a ‘centerpiece’ that would generate revenue in addition to housing, grocery and dining. The casino, which will be part of an entertainment complex, will be located on Reservation 13. This is the Hill East Community. "I personally don’t have a problem with it and I’m sure it’s going to bring in revenue because people love to gamble," said Demetris Williams. But that’s not the same sentiment for other neighbors. "That sounds awful. That would not be good for our city! That would not be good for this neighborhood," Allison Vecere adds. Simone Taylor, who lives just feet away from the RFK campus, says that the "type of activities casinos bring, I wouldn’t vouch for it to be so close to residential and schools. It makes no sense." ANC 7F Commissioner Tyrell Holcomb was in this meeting with the real estate developer. In a statement to FOX 5 DC he says: "We are supportive of Chatman Holdings receiving the land from DMPED (Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development) and believe their proposed development will bring real benefits that further positions Ward 7 residents for long-term growth." We reached out to council member Wendell Felder. The stadium site is in his ward. He says he has not had a chance to review this proposal. "At this time, the Councilmember is focused on advancing community-driven development at Hill East that brings family-serving amenities, housing, recreation, and economic opportunities to residents," said a spokesperson with Felders office. Other city leaders, like Council Member Charles Allen, are also weighing in on the casino proposal. In a statement, Allen said, "It’s a monumentally bad idea. They want a sweetheart deal for the land and then try to bring a Vegas-style casino to DC. It’s a recipe for disaster and a hard pass for me." Neighbors agree that a casino may not be a priority at this moment for this community. "Maybe some sort of rec for the kids and more activities like that," said Taylor. "We want safe streets. We want parks! We want a playground. We want swimming pools! Ya a casino, no thank you!" says Vecere. FOX 5 has reached out to Mayor Muriel Bowser on this plan and her office says the developer has not engaged the mayor or anyone in D.C. government. A spokesperson for Bowser also adds that ‘a casino is not part of the vision for the area. It’s also important to note that table gambling is not legal in the city, but there is legislation pending right now to allow it in certain parts of D.C. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development provided comment to FOX 5 Friday evening, saying: "DMPED is not aware of any proposal that was presented at the ANC 7F by Chatman development and PVEDI. DMPED has not met with Chatman Development about any Phase 3 development on Hill East either. Per the DMPED’s typical development and disposition process, DMPED will issue a Hill East Phase 3 RFP when ready. And Developers are free to reply with their proposals for DMPED’s consideration and selection. Additionally, any development proposal on Hill Eats will have to comply with the Council approved Hill East Master Plan as well. Given the current market conditions there is no immediate plans to issue Hill East Phase 3 RFP either."

Wrong-way driver causes crash on I-270, shutting down lanes for hours
A wrong-way crash shut down parts of I-270 near Clarksburg Road in Montgomery County for hours on Friday. The driver involved has been arrested but the multi-county investigation into the suspect continues at this time. A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Department said officers were dispatched around 4:17 p.m. for reports of a wrong-way driver going down south in the northbound lane of I-270. Officials say the incident originated in Frederick. Maryland State Police and Frederick Police were pursuing the vehicle, but once the driver entered Montgomery County, MCPD officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Officials say the driver eventually collided with another vehicle and stopped. That's when he reportedly got out of the car with a child. Police say the man was standing in the roadway holding the child. Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and negotiators with the department were called in. Eventually, the suspect was tased once and was taken into custody. FOX 5's SkyCam caught video of a man being loaded into an ambulance but it was not immediately clear if it was the suspect, as a spokesperson for MCPD said there were believed to be injuries related to the crash. The child is ok. The MCPD spokesperson said there may be injuries related to the collision but it's unclear who was injured or the severity of those injuries. No additional information about the suspect has been released. It's also not clear what charges he may face in connection with the incident. The age of the child he was with is not known, but again, police say the juvenile was not harmed. All lanes of I-270 have since reopened.

Man charged with multiple assaults along W&OD Trail in Fairfax County
A man has been arrested and charged in connection to multiple cases of assault and indecent exposure on a popular trail in Fairfax County. Koby Berry, 27, is facing charges of indecent exposure, assault and trespassing. According to Fairfax County police, on Oct. 30, a suspect jumped in front of a female bicyclist on the W&OD trail and tackled her off her bike before fleeing. Then, on Nov. 1, a suspect went into a hotel room in the 12100 block of Sunset Hills Road in Reston, claiming that he was security looking for someone who defecated on the sidewalk. While in the room, he exposed himself to the women inside and fled. On Nov. 9, officers once again responded to the W&OD Trail, this time near Hunter Mill Road after a suspect reportedly tried to hit a man walking on the trail and took a woman’s phone. That's when officers found Berry on the trail and took him into custody. He was charged with two counts of simple assault and larceny. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center and released. Following his release, Berry allegedly touched a woman inappropriately at a store in the 1400 block of North Point Village Center in Reston on Nov. 11. Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the business and positively identified the suspect as**** Berry, and he was charged with simple assault. He was arrested again on Nov. 15. Through their investigation, detectives determined that Berry was the suspect in both the Nov. 1 indecent exposure incident and the Oct. 30 assault. He's been charged with indecent exposure, assault and trespassing for those incidents and remains in jail without bond. Detectives are asking anyone who may have had an incident with Berry or more information about these cases to call our Reston District Station at 703-478-0904 and ask to speak with a detective. TSA may charge passengers without REAL ID or passport: What we know
A new proposed TSA policy may charge travelers without a REAL ID or passport a fee to verify their identity and be able to board a plane. The TSA calls it a "modernized alternative identity verification program." The policy notice says the fee is optional, but it’s still unclear if travelers who don’t pay the fee will be able to fly. ## What does the new TSA policy say? The new alternative identity verification program will use a biometric kiosk to identify passengers faster. **READ MORE:****Trump admin gives $10k bonuses to air traffic controllers with perfect attendance during government shutdown** The program is expected to make the alternative verification process more efficient, though it still doesn’t guarantee that passengers’ identities will be verified. The new policy notice was published Nov. 20, but there’s no set date on when it could take effect. TSA will charge $18 for each passenger without a REAL ID or passport. A TSA spokesperson told Fox News Digital that additional guidance will be announced in the coming days. **READ MORE:****Major TSA security changes ahead: How your next airport experience could look** "This notice serves as a next step in the process [of] REAL ID compliance, which was signed into law more than 20 years ago and finally implemented by Secretary [Kristi] Noem as of May 2025," said the spokesperson. ## Can you fly without a REAL ID or passport? Currently, those who still lack an identification that complies with the REAL ID law are diverted to a different line and have to take extra steps to verify their identity. TSA has warned people who don’t have the REAL ID to show up early and be prepared for advanced screening to avoid causing delays. ## What is a REAL ID? REAL ID is a federally compliant state-issued license or identification card that Homeland Security says is a more secure form of identification. It was a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission and signed into law in 2005. The commission recommended the government set security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs. It was supposed to be rolled out in 2008. But the implementation was repeatedly delayed until May 2025. Besides needing a REAL ID to fly domestically, people also need one to access certain federal buildings and facilities. A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license has a symbol (in most states, a star) in the top corner of the card.

Person allegedly made 'white supremacist' threats at DC office of Rep. Jasmine Crockett
A threat was reportedly made at the D.C. office of Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett. According to the congresswoman's office, the suspect made threats and hand gestures. There were no injuries and the incident was contained. The incident at the congresswoman's office was reported Thursday evening. Crockett, who represents Texas' 30th District, has been an outspoken member of the Democratic party, drawing intense ire from President Donald Trump and much of the Republican Party. She has notably spoken out against Trump and his administration, made inflammatory comments about former Trump ally and DOGE leader Elon Musk and clashed with Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Crockett now regularly appears on CNN and continues to champion progressive policies. She has vehemently pushed back against many of Trump's policies, particularly in defense of DEI initiatives and women's rights. Crockett's office released a statement following the alleged threat Thursday night. You can read it in full below: "Today an individual showed up to my D.C. office and made white supremacist threats and hand gestures. Everyone is safe, and I want to thank Capitol Police for their swift response. But let me be crystal clear: this cannot become the norm. We’re living in a time where political violence is being fueled from the very top. When the President of United States spreads hate and lies, when he targets his political opponents, when he openly calls for the death of sitting Members of Congress, he is putting a literal target on our backs. The President should be committed unity, not more division. Some folks have questioned why I need security. This is why. Every time I speak truth, stand up for my constituents, or call out corruption, the threats get louder—and more dangerous. I will not be intimidated. I will not be silenced. I will continue to show up for the people of Texas’ 30th Congressional District. But we cannot pretend that this is normal. When leaders promote hate, hate shows up—sometimes right at our door."

Judge rules Trump's deployment of National Guard to DC was illegal, orders troops to leave
A federal judge on Thursday ruled that Trump administration’s deployment of the National Guard to D.C. was illegal, and has ordered that the troops leave the city, but it’s unlikely that they’ll be leaving immediately. That federal judge on Thursday ruled that the president’s deployment of the National Guard in D.C. is illegal and she ordered it to end. But she also put that order essentially on hold for 21 days to give the administration time to appeal, which it almost certainly will. That’s why we don’t expect to see troops pack up and leave any time soon. This ruling is significant. It comes about three months after Trump first deployed thousands of troops to D.C. as part of the "crime emergency" that he declared back in August. Trump’s order brought a surge of hundreds of federal agents onto city streets and prompted protests across the District, as well as a lawsuit from D.C.’s Attorney General Brian Schwalb, who sued the Trump administration, arguing the president did not have the authority to deploy the Guard without the mayor’s consent. Schwalb has doubled down, calling the deployment illegal. In a statement to FOX 5, in part, "From the beginning, we made clear that the U.S. military should not be policing American citizens on American soil. It is long past time to let the National Guard go home to their everyday lives, their regular jobs, their families, and their children." Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson maintained the president’s deployment of the troops is, in fact, legal. "President Trump is well within his lawful authority to deploy the National Guard in Washington D.C. to protect federal assets and assist law enforcement with specific tasks. This lawsuit is nothing more than another attempt — at the detriment of DC residents — to undermine the President’s highly successful operations to stop violent crime in D.C.," the statement reads. There’s no doubt that the guard’s presence in D.C. has been controversial. The administration argued it helped keep crime here down and while some residents agreed and welcomed it the additional law enforcement, others called it unnecessary and dangerous. We’ll have to wait to see exactly how an appeal plays out.

'ChatGPT for Teachers': Northern VA school districts test out new AI program for educators
A first-of-its-kind AI rollout is coming to classrooms in Fairfax County and Prince William County. OpenAI — the makers of ChatGPT — is partnering with about a dozen school districts nationwide on a new pilot tool built exclusively for teachers and only two districts in the D.C. region made the cut. Fairfax County and Prince William County are the only school districts in the DMV selected to partner with OpenAI to pilot "ChatGPT for teachers." Prince William County Superintendent Dr. Latanya McDade says the tool is a game-changer designed to maximize what teachers can do for their students. It’s called "_ChatGPT for Teachers_." The platform features teacher-specific prompts, built-in collaboration tools, and most importantly. Privacy and security protections not found in regular AI platforms, which often use inputs to train their models. "One of the things we’re most excited about with this version is the safety and security that comes with it," said Matt Guilfoyle, Chief Information Officer for Prince William County Schools. "It’s an enterprise version — they’re not training the model on the data teachers input, so they are able to do things in a much more safe and secure way. That data is not stored. We have the ability for Prince William County Schools to monitor it to make sure it’s used in a safe way." This new pilot is rolling out across more than a dozen districts nationwide, from California to Texas and only two here in the D.C. area. Many teachers already use ChatGPT to design lesson plans, analyze writing samples, and find creative ways to engage students. One local high school teacher told FOX 5 that this version could significantly cut down the hours they spend prepping. "We'd be so consumed with how long it took to structure fun lessons. Time is cut to maybe an eighth of the time it took before, so we can spend more time in the room, with the students, having fun the activities," Woodbridge High School teacher Brittany Sudberry said. ChatGPT for teachers is exclusively for educators and school leaders, not students, at least not yet, and districts say it’s a supplemental tool not a replacement for the human role teachers play. "Absolutely what we do not want is for ChatGPT to replace critical though." Guilfoyle said. "We absolutely still believe that Instruction and support for students are still delivered by a trusted adult and by the teacher." The pilot in Prince William County is now active in about 100 schools, giving 13,000 teachers access as the district tries to keep pace with technology. "It's very important for us, at the new stage, to teach our young people who will be using this in their careers and in their entire lives, how to take command of it rather than it take command of them and their thoughts," Sudberry said. The tool will be free through June 2027. After that, districts will decide whether it’s worth investing in long-term.

Thanksgiving dinner may be a little less expensive this year, according to annual survey
Here’s something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: a recent survey found that your holiday meal may cost a little less this year than last. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) released its 40th annual Thanksgiving dinner survey, which found that the average cost of this year’s meal may cost Americans about five percent less money than last. "This is the third straight year of declines, but we saw record-highs in 2022, and while we’re coming back down, we still haven’t gotten to pre-2022 levels," said AFBF Economist Faith Parum. The group gets volunteer shoppers to check grocery store prices all over the country during the first week of November. Officials said the shoppers look at the same items every year, including turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream, all in quantities sufficient for 10 servings. The Farm Bureau survey found that turkey dramatically dropped in price this year, which played a big part in bringing down the overall cost. That’s despite wholesale turkey prices having increased, because researchers said grocery store deals are keeping retail prices down. "Thankfully, we know what day all these people are going to want turkeys, and so grocery stores can kind of continue to offer deals and coupons and specials to get people in the store," explained Parum. Prices have increased for other Thanksgiving staples, Parum added. That includes sweet potatoes, which have been affected by hurricane damage in North Carolina, the country’s largest sweet potato grower. Shoppers who spoke with FOX 5 Thursday in Silver Spring said the idea of lower prices sounds good to them. Still, some were skeptical of the survey’s results. "I feel like grocery shopping has gone up. So, I don’t think I actually believe that," said Seyram Dodor. For more information, you can read the AFBF’s full survey here.

Families pack school board meeting over MCPS boundary changes
Dozens of families are speaking out about proposed boundary changes at a Montgomery County School Board meeting Thursday night after another proposal seems to have popped up recently. The boundary study has been a point of contention in Montgomery County schools for months now as parents and families weigh four options presented by the district. It’ll change where thousands of students go to middle and high school in the coming years. The goal is to relieve overcrowding and utilize the new Crown High School in Gaithersburg. But a few weeks ago, families learned that another option could be at play — using Crown as a holding school instead of opening it as planned, so schools like Wootton High could undergo renovations. Change.org petitions both in favor of and opposed to that plan each have more than a thousand signatures at this point. Parents tell FOX 5 DC they are passionate about changes to boundaries because it can change everything from where their kids go to school, programs they’re in — to property values. Parents who want Crown to open and be used as scheduled tell me they’re disappointed — and say it seems like the district tried to sneak in the proposal without anyone noticing. "Well, someone noticed, and the news spread like wildfire," said MCPS parent Monica Bassi. "The whole community has organized — we’ve activated — and we’re doing everything we can to make sure that an underserved city like Gaithersburg, in terms of academic resources, does not get left behind again." The boundary study and program analysis changes are on the agenda for Thursday evening just before 7:00 p.m.

READ MORE: DC residents weigh in on proposed design for Commanders new stadium Residents met in breakout groups with city representatives during the two-hour session. Preserving landmarks, protecting the environment, improving transit, affordability and architectural character were among the priorities raised. Under an April agreement with the District of Columbia, the Commanders will return to the nation’s capital in a new $4 billion stadium to be built on the RFK site, where the team played for more than three decades and won three Super Bowls in the 1980s and 1990s. Earlier this month, the Commanders announced that global design firm HKS will serve as lead architect for the project. The D.C. Council approved the deal in September, with the Commanders contributing $2.7 billion and the city investing about $1.1 billion for a stadium, housing, green space and a sports complex along the Anacostia River. Demolition is already underway. It is expected to seat 65,000 and have a roof to make it a year-round venue for concerts and other events. The new venue is slated to open in 2030. Information about a public scoping meeting for the stadium plan can be found online. READ MORE: Washington Commanders choose lead architect for new stadium at RFK site

DC residents weigh in on proposed design for Commanders new stadium
D.C. residents sounded off Wednesday on what they do and don’t want at the Commanders’ new stadium. There's no doubt that there is a lot of excitement about this project all across D.C. and at the community meeting but folks also know it’s also going to be a serious undertaking. Chief among the concerns of the members of the public who spoke were parking, safety and accessibility, just to name a few. Last week, the Washington Commanders announced that the global design firm HKS will serve as lead architect for the team’s new state-of-the-art stadium. It’s projected to cost close to $4 billion. D.C. Department of Buildings Director Brian Hanlon said Wednesday night that attendees at the meeting were participating in history by having a hand potentially not just in the design of the stadium but also the massive mixed-use housing and retail development planned around it, with 6,000 homes planned – 30% of which are scheduled to be affordable housing. The development will also include restaurants, shops and green space and much more. Residents on Wednesday met in breakout groups with city representatives and also entered their feedback directly into tablets and computers. Many said they are concerned about reserving landmarks, protecting the environment, access to the stadium, restrooms, parking, public transit changes, mobility options, affordability and character of the architecture. "Primarily, the concern is parking, traffic, and things like that could be disruptive, particularly during stadium events," D.C. resident Mark Hudson said. "We think it’s going to be very positive for the neighborhood and have a positive impact on us, but want to make sure it’s done right "I’m hoping to learn about the economic impact that this will have, and hopefully it will benefit directly the residents of Wards 7 and 8 while maintaining a balanced capital investment in the city," resident Stanley Harris said. "Shopping center, housing, shopping center right near the stadium," D.C. resident Leroy Wilson said. "That’s good for the city, pretty good for the city. Some of what folks advocated for on Wednesday was actually quite specific. A substantial number of pickleball players showed up tonight to advocate for courts to be built as part of that mixed-use space. This certainly will not be the last time we’ll talk about all of this as the stadium is not expected to open until 2030. But as for the surrounding housing and retail spaces, FOX 5 has learned that the builds could be delayed until 2040.
