I just wish search engines were usable again. If we're lucky, everyone will sober up soon and the money dries up completely. They do much more harm than good as it stands. In isolation, they're interesting as a research topic but that's not what we're actually doing with them.

I think the biggest thing that bothers me is that all the money being poured into these things is wasted in comparison to what traditional ML research could be doing with that money (medicine esp). Doing away with coding asst. or any other 'kinda-useful' use wouldn't bother me at all.

I like this, it's a really grounded take. I don't think they're suddenly going to hit the event horizon and throw the world into chaos as humans get optimized out of existence. I don't know we got that far off. I use LLMs constantly (my job revolves around them) and I agree with you.
