“Light is what we see.”

I’ve discovered a number of artworks by Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz throughout Vienna over the last 4 summers. Now on show at the Albertina is a retrospective exhibition of her work, expressions of her fascination and examination of light.

“LIBRE.”

St. Stephen’s Cathedral at Stephansplatz within Vienna’s inner city. Mounted on the side of the cathedral is an advertising poster with singer Dua Lipa for Yves Saint Laurent, which includes the word “LIBRE” in large bold upper-case letters in Helvetica font. The poster overlooks a “parking area” for Fiaker or horse-drawn carriages seen throughout the inner city. At lower-left is a woman passing by; her ponytail seemingly paired with Dua Lipa’s long hair in the poster. It isn’t a far stretch to think about horse manes as well. The meaning of the French word “LIBRE” is “free”, which creates questions about what that really means. Did the church feel free to gain income using its walls as an advertising venue? Are the horses “free”? How much do visitors see when they ride on those carriages? Can any of us possibly extract ourselves safely from the daily grind? Photo on 1 July 2025.

In the left section of the grand "VAMOS GIGANTES" mural is the famously high leg-kick by Dominican pitcher Juan Marichal, who played for baseball's major league San Francisco Giants from 1960 to 1973. At the mural's bottom-left corner is an expression in both English and Spanish: "All of us are created equal, some of us grow up to be Giants." - "Todos somos creados iguales, solo algunos crecemos a ser Gigantes." To the right of Marichal in the mural are the minor league Pacific Coast League team Mission Reds whose home venue was Seals Stadium in San Francisco's Mission District from 1926 to 1937. If you're in Vienna on hot summer days and plan to use the city's U-Bahn, note the platform displays inside the stations. The little "underscore" (_) next to the wait-time in minutes indicates the corresponding train has air-conditioning (Klimaanlage).

Travel day 11, Europe day 10, Berlin day 05. Outside the Urban Nation Museum for Contemporary Art in Berlin Schöneberg is a display highlight the current exhibition "Love Letters to the City". Near the top is an alien made with tiles provided by French artist Invader to coincide with the opening of the museum in 2017. Travel day 14, Europe day 13, Berlin day 08. From inside the Sophie-Gips-Höfe courtyards, this phrase by American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner appears: “Milk and honey taken far far away” / “Milch und Honig weit weit weggebracht”. I've paired his 1990s word-art installation with the ephemeral nature of clouds. Or was he saying something about reunification, its aftermath, and consequences? Travel day 17, Europe day 16, Berlin day 11. Berlin's U-Bahn system includes over 170 stations, and while stations might have a similar look with similar font-labels, many have their own look. For the U-Bahn U9 line, the northern terminus station is Osloer Strasse, and the key signatures of the Norwegian flag are prominent on the station walls. Travel day 18, Europe day 17, Berlin day 12. Near Berlin's Zoo Station, the Helmut Newton Foundation is home not only to the archives of Helmut Newton and Alice Springs, but also to the Museum for Photography. At present, the museum highlights the enduring legacy of "instant" Polaroid images: how Helmut Newton used them not only as experiments for his fashion-photography shoots (with only film-cameras at the time), but also as looks behind the scenes and into the Newtons' lives. On 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand troops (aka #Anzacs) stormed the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula near Çanakkale. Today in Canberra near the Australia War Memorial stands a memorial garden as a symbol of modern ties between 🇦🇺 and 🇹🇷.

French artist Invader installed 56 tiny tiled aliens throughout the Austrian capital city of Vienna. Over 3 successive summers, I chased down & imaged 44, with 12 already removed or stolen. As one of many projects, these provide me the scope to walk & learn the city.
