William Browne's political career started in 1893 as the MLA for Croydon (in-between Normanton and Gilbert River). He held the seat until his death on 12 April 1904.
Browne was leader of the Opposition and chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Party (1900—1903) and then became Minister of Mines.

Green returned to Gilbert River Station to report what happened.
