Fortress Of Covers

I examined every comic cover published by DC and Marvel from June 1961 to last month's issue. I’ve got things to say about this revolution in art.
Tom Sutton's first cover for #MarvelComics. The man who brought Vampirella to life. He had an incredible style and sadly did not do much work for #Marvel #TomSutton

April 1970 #MarieSeverin wins the Best Cover of April 1970 #ChamberOfDarkness. Theatrical staging, pulling your eye from the foreground figures to the glowing, labyrinthine medieval city behind them. The city is impossibly detailed. A maze of Tudor buildings, latticed windows, and crooked rooftops.

Introducing Bernie Wrightson. His first cover was at #MarvelComics in October 1970. However, Bernie had been working #DCComics for two years on #HouseOfMystery and #HouseOfSecrets, but without doing a cover. Without a doubt, one of the Greatest artists to ever do it. #ChamberofDarkness

JUne 1970 Cover by #NealAdams. #HouseOfMystery #DCComics Neal brings his hallmarks to this masterwork. Staging, figure work, and atmospheric tension. Unmatched realism, multiple reactions, everything is unsettling.

January 1970 #NealAdams #DetectiveComics Two-tiered vertical descent. He often used architectural framing to guide psychological tension. The cover encapsulates Adams reinterpretation of him as a gothic detective haunted by metaphysical dilemmas, not just gangsters and gadgets. #Batman #DCComics

Sep '66 #CoveroftheMonth. #THOR by #JackKIrby versus #GICombat by #RussHeath. Heath brings claustrophobic and diagonal design elements to war realism versus Kirby's cosmic mythology composition, which explodes outward in radial motion with circular kinetic force and curved vectors. Who Do You Got?

Aug '65 #CoveroftheMonth. #SeaDevils by #HowardPurcell delivers an underwater epic with astonishing vertical design versus #RawhideKid by #JackKirby Figures leap, fall, and shoot in all directions, creating an explosive barroom brawl transplanted to the open river. Who Do you Got!?!?! #Marvel #DC

Cover by #NealAdams #Superman The Invulnerable icon who hovers above ALL other Super-Heroes dropped into a most vulnerable setting. Chained down at wrists and ankles. Adams brings realism to the masked doctors. Supes is exposed, examined, and helpless. A grotesque and endlessly intriguing cover.

Cover by #NealAdams April 1968. The Head of Hate! #Superman #DCComics.

Cover by #JohnRomita May 1970 #Spider-Man pitched diagonally across the page, giving energy and making the eye move from Kingpin’s thrust. Instead of centralizing the hero, it tilts and spills outward. #Kingpin dominates the left with solidity, while Spidey's body twists upward. #MarvelComics

Cover by #GeneColan. #Daredevil A transitional cover. Moving away from the earlier pulp-style urban noir, it leans toward the larger-than-life crime drama that would typify early 1970s Marvel. #MarvelComics

An unprecedented 101 consecutive issue run (Nov 1961 - August 1970) by #JackKirby ends, and #JohnRomita steps in with #FantasticFour. #MarvelComics

August 1967 Cover of the Month Battle - Who do you got?
#JackKirby #FantasticFour goes up against #CarmineInfantino #Batman. This was #DCComics first use of #logoincorporation A glorious time for comic books.

Cover by #JerryGrandenetti. War realism meets horror stylization? Perhaps. Grandenetti is not as sharp as #RUssHeath or #JoeKubert but does solid framing and distortion because he goes for psychological impact. Excellent use of colors as well. #DCComics best cover for November 1963

Illustrator #GrayMorrow worked across #ECComics, #WarrenPublishing, and #ClassicsIllustrated, producing only 13 covers bet 70–'88. His first for #DCComics #HouseofSecrets in the style of #NealAdams to maintain visual consistency, though ironically, Adams never gave that a consideration himself.

Cover by #BarryWindsor-Smith December 1970 Barry was a major part of the second wave of Comic Artists. An incredible run on #ConantheBarbarian.

Search. Re-Search. According to Stan Goldberg, not #JackKirby, but Joe Maneely was Stan Lee’s favorite. Maneely’s career was tragically cut short when he died in a train accident on June 7, 1958. For reasons still unknown, #JackKirby delivered what stands as the first homage cover with issue #42.

From Jun 1961 to Dec 1969, #MarvelComics published 1,396 comics. Of those, #JackKirby drew 556 covers! Almost FORTY PERCENT of Marvel’s entire output! 39.8% of the imagery was coming from one artist. He was truly an Artist and StoryTeller with infinite imagination. @jackkirbymuseum.bsky.social

Cover by #GeorgeTuska. Although working with Timely Comics since 1949, George didn't get a cover until #X-Men December 1967. Very much in the vein of #JackKirby which was the "House Style" A few months later he takes over #IronMan
