In public discourse we even call Argentinians "hermanos" - note that we use the Spanish word instead of the Portuguese "irmãos", as if we want to make clear that we see them as siblings. It's a siblings rivalry. 2/2

TBF it isn't unexpected. In a dispute between Argentinians and British we tend to side with the former for several reasons, ranging from anticolonialism to a Latin American common identity. Also, we don't know a lot about Argentine history or how the Falklands successive occupations unfolded. 1/2

I think that the Falklands issue is appealing in Argentina because it is an intersection of nationalism and anticolonialism - both misguided because there were no pre-modern people living there.

It's a perfect example of the horseshoe political theory.

There isn't a mention of the Falklands in this article. So you're either someone who doesn't know where the Falkland Islands are (hint: it is at least 300 miles away from Argentinian shores) or an Argie trying and failing to gaslight.

Brazilian media and Brazilian-made maps still call them Malvinas (although maps also show Falklands with smaller letters).

IIRC Brazilian press coverage of the war back then was markedly pro-Argentina.

Among leftists here in Brazil this issue is seen as part of the anticolonial struggle.

Usually casualties aren't the military objective, but sometimes they are.

I should point out that killing an enemy military commander in wartime is very different from shooting civilians in boats at high seas.

A bit off-topic, but I find it nice putting the Brazilian flag near the UN flag in the background. 🇺🇳🇧🇷

That being said, those mfers from the top to the guy who pulled the trigger belong in jail.

You know that this whole thing is bad when you assume that those shipwreck survivors were combatants in the first place. The double tap was a crime even if it happened in combat, which wasn't the case.

But for all we know those people could be either fishermen or smugglers, civilians anyway.

As always, Peskov is lying. Those attacks happened in the Turkish EEZ, not in Turkish territorial sea. For legal purposes, the EEZ surface is still considered international waters for navigating.

Türkiye concern is whether the sinking will affect fisheries, not about sovereignty violations.

I know that the midterms usually force the president to spend his political capital in 2 years.

But this speedrun presidency with people looking for exits in just 10 months is something else.

I despise Maduro and want him gone. However, there's a real risk that the US military wrecks Venezuela and leave Colombia and Brazil to deal with the fallout (mainly another wave of refugees).

Que lugar bizarro para uma escuta: perto do chão e longe das bocas que falam.

Aliás, é a terceira versão dos fatos: a primeira foi a batida na escada, a segunda foi a curiosidade.

He spent probably more than six hours doing that before setting off a tampering alarm.

That played a part, but the Soviet scare was compounded by several things, among them:
- Reagan aggressive rhetoric that reversed the détente started by Nixon
- Soviet paranoia that triggered a massive intel operation to look for any signs that US and NATO intended to strike first (Operation RYAN)
