Who else should we follow here?!
The Winter Solstice — the longest night and shortest day of the year — is today, and I'm thinking about darkness.

I'm thinking about how our dominant culture tends to speak disparagingly about, and even fear, darkness.

Today is #GiveToTheMaxDay here in Minnesota. A HUGE day for fundraising. Tens of millions will be raised by the end of the day. 🔥

All of my nonprofit fundraising comrades are working their tails off today.

In the latest episode of the For the Love of Humanity Podcast, we explore troubling realities within the nonprofit sector.

Through a series of real-life stories, we highlight how far many organizations have strayed from their noble missions of community care.

When I got sick, my people showed up.

So many signed up for our Meal Train — many providing multiple meals for us throughout the course of my treatments.

I also asked for volunteers to go on walks with me, to keep me both active and connected. A number of people chose that one.

These things often dawn on you slowly.

At first, on Wednesday morning, I saw an alert come through on Nextdoor, about an active shooter situation nearby.

Odd. Unusual.

False alarm?

Sometimes those happen.

Surely that was it.

In my more-than-a-decade-and-a-half of professional fundraising, I’ve lost count of the number of people who have told me that fundraising feels “yucky” to them. I’ve heard many different reasons why.

Friends, we don’t need to do more.

So many of us are stuck in a feedback loop, one where we constantly feel like we are not-enough… so we feel like we need to do more… in order to be enough… or at least acceptable… or even just OK.

Our entire foundation is thus insecure.

This post is a throwback to one of our most popular essays on Substack (linked below):

"Weaving the Fabric Back Together."

We wrote this right after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when the outcome seriously threatened everything we who do community work stand for.

Check out Ep 02, just released on 7/11, with this title: The Nonprofit Industrial Complex Must Be Composted.

SO many of its themes are central to what we're ALL about.

Definitely give it a listen... either at the link below... or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Amen.
Weekend warrior culture assumes you have unlimited energy to 'maximize' your free time. What if your weekend is for recovery from the week, not preparation for the next one? Rest is productive too.

Community is the way.

Community is the destination... AND it is the journey.

If those of us in the work of philanthropy want to get where our hearts yearn to be (to justice, to healing, to joy, to solidarity, to a place where we know that we and all of our fellow human beings matter...

We are still not OK, here in Minnesota. And we here at For the Love of Humanity are resolute in this truth: our politics cannot be violent. Even more, we believe our politics should be centered on care for each other.

This is the story of the first five-figure gift I ever raised, as a fundraiser.

I was meeting this donor for the first time.

He was an older white man, and I knew he was very wealthy — two things that would usually make a young, not-wealthy woman like me feel lesser-than...
