Would you have gone on strike too? Would you have been a Nazi collaborator? I used to think that was a ridiculous question for Americans. Now I think it’s ridiculous *not* to ask this.

Today and every year on this date at 11:00 a.m., all public transit in Amsterdam stops for one minute to remember the February strike. A statue called “De Dokwerker” shows an ordinary dock worker looking up and beginning to clench his fists.

On Tuesday, February 25, 1941, tens of thousands of non-Jews in Amsterdam went on a general strike to protest specifically the Nazi treatment of Jews, bringing the Dutch economy to a halt. The Nazis reacted swiftly and violently, and the strike ended on Thursday.
