Mercedes junior driver Karl Wendlinger made his Grand Prix debut. The 22 year old Austrian having been placed with the Leyton House team. Wendlinger's debut would be brief, getting caught up in a multi-car accident on lap 2.

At Suzuka, Ayrton Senna (McLaren-Honda) became F1 World Champion for the 3rd & final time, finishing 2nd at the Japanese Grand Prix. Senna gifted victory to teammate Gerhard Berger. Riccardo Patrese (Williams-Renault) was 3rd.

Needing a victory to keep his World Championship dreams alive, Nigel Mansell (Williams-Renault-FW14) was hounding 2nd placed Ayrton Senna when (on lap 10) he made a mistake at the first corner, spun off & got beached in the gravel.

Remembering 1977 Belgian Grand Prix winner Gunnar Nilsson, who passed away (aged 29) in Charing Cross hospital, London #OnThisDay in 1978.

Nilsson had courageously battled cancer. He took part in 31 Grand Prix, all with Lotus, during 1976-1977.
