My space for a man is filled up with cat fur. Hello, he says, I am a sexy man, I would like to spend some time with you. I look him up and down. He is sexy, I suppose. He comes into my house authoritatively and sits on my sofa. He beckons me. The cat jumps on him and starts kneading his lap. Hmmm. He says, trying not to look put out. There is cat fur on his trousers. He tries not to look at it. I am very kind he says, you should appreciate that. I think it over. Perhaps I should. He places the cat on the floor. Sit down with me he commands. I sit, but wondering if I really want to. The cats jump up. He tries to ignore them. What a lovely cat he says, patting the cat like its a dog. The cat and I politely pretend we arent horrified. I have DOGS myself. Spaniels. They dont come in the house mind you. They KNOW their PLACE . He is very loud. He says 'I am very interesting and important' I kiss him to shut him up, and anyway he IS very good looking. The cat miaows and gets between us. He looks put out. We go upstairs. I don't really want to, but he wants to and thats all that matters, once you have a man in your house. A man makes me quiet, and small. Obedient. These thoughts run through the back of my head and I see them, but I dont act on them, because this is what I want, what I must want to stay safe. We go into my room and the cats follow us. There is cat fur on the pillows. The cats sleep on the pillows, next to my face. Except for one, who sleeps in the bed next to my stomach, curled up in a perfect warm circle, a magic piece of wildness that honours me with its presence. I will never get over being so blessed. There is cat fur on the PILLOW, he says. I look at the cat fur, and I look at him, suddenly small and pompous and notsogoodlooking with a sulky look on his face. Put out at a little cat fur. Yes that's their pillow. It's where they sleep, I say. And suddenly I have some strength. You could sleep at the end of the bed? He is very loud. My cats. One climbs on my lap purring and liquid and warm and I hug it. And I think I am so lucky. The space for a man in this house is full up with cat fur.
