8. Cut the flowers in the early morning & place them in a vase (or buckets) of clean water. They have an *exceptionally* long vase life. Pair early varieties with the last of the season's lisianthus, & with dahlias & foxgloves. Pair later blooming varieties with stock, snapdragons, & sweet peas.

7. The chrysanthemums like to have a bit of nitrogen, early in their season, to help them put on green growth and become robust plants, as well as full sun, and regular watering. When the days shorten for autumn, they will initiate blooming, and begin to make cut-flowers for you.

6. Plant your mother plants and cuttings close together, only 6-9" apart. This will make them feel crowded, and they will grow upwards, and this will create long, strong, straight stems for your cut-flowers, instead of sprawling, wonky, bushy plants. Make sure they have soil with compost to grow in.

5. Bring your mother plants up in very early spring, water them, and give them a sunny window or grow light. Sprouts will grow, that you can cut off, poke into the soil, and they will become more rooted cuttings for you to grow, share, trade, or sell. Plant them after the last frost in spring.

4. When you order a set of 4 itty bitty rooted cuttings, they'll be expensive. It's ok, because they will grow into "mother" plants. You can dig them up at the end of fall, store them in your basement, bring them up in early spring, and make a bunch more plants with them! Dig, trim, pot, store.

3. Heirloom chrysanthemums bloom in autumn & come in early fall, mid fall, & late fall blooming varieties. If you live in a zone with an early frost, choose an early blooming variety so it has enough time to grow and bloom. When you order them, it will say if it's an early, mid, or late bloom.

2. Just like dahlias, heirloom chrysanthemums have many varieties that grow all different colors, bloom forms, and sizes. It is exciting to pick out heirloom chrysanthemums that make flowers that you will love! I took every picture in this thread, of the mums I grow-and how I pair them for bouquets.
