In the spring of 2008, I feared America was on the verge of war with Iran — and, believing that it’s good style to get to know people before you bomb them, I made “Rick Steves’ Iran,” a one-hour special that could (and would) only debut on PBS. Sadly, this special has become pertinent again today.
Iran
Join Rick as he explores the most surprising and fascinating land he's ever visited: Iran. In a one-hour, ground-breaking travel special on public television, you'll discover the splendid monuments of...

As much as I love our native Shortleaf Pine... it really gives me grief this time of year.

Hoping for rain to wash this stuff away!

I don't want a job. I just want to tend to my garden and give away native plants.

Our DOGE tracker is updated with a whole slew of new names, and now you can filter by agency to see which of the DOGErs have been where. Great work by @williamturton.bsky.social, @chrisbing.bsky.social, @kirstenberg.bsky.social and others!

After the most recent round of rains...
Butterflies are emerging!
First Tiger Swallowtail of the season!

In a world full of chaos and pain, there are still moments of delight.
Just look at this beautiful butterfly.

Springfield friends, it might be raining so bring those umbrellas and/or ponchos... BUT get yourself some beautiful natives to plant in your yard! The bugs will thank you! I'll be there spending some big bucks!

Wild plum currently in bloom. A native that will blow your senses away with its heavenly sweet scent. You can often smell it before you see it, it's sweet scent is so distant. It's also a favorite for a wide range of pollinators.

Story breaks that the Forest Service is going to fire 7,000 employees, about 20% of its workforce, while Trump promises to cut, baby, cut with new executive orders. What a time to be an employee.
Thankfully the robins are back out in numbers, singing, and bringing joy. Trump can't take that away.

Once again, Missouri's majority-white, conservative government is moving to strip authority from officials in St. Louis and, some say, to diminish Black influence over policing.

Missouri GOP’s Effort to Take Over St. Louis Police Hearkens Back to Civil War
City officials say the state’s plan to wrest back control of the police department is an attempt by white conservatives to weaken Black political influence. It’s part of a broader pattern of Missouri ...

A federal reduction in force (RIF) is beginning! Will I lose my job? Will I have to relocate? Will I get demoted? Give myself a 50/50 chance one of those things happen.

It has begun.
Under the guise of "efficiency" the institutions that serve so many people and so many interests are being dismantled and destroyed. Not by eliminating bloat, but by targeting the working man and woman at the bottom.
