Just got my hands on this. Written by my colleague Jason Burke a terrific writer and journalist. Our paths have crossed in the past, especially covering the Arab and Islamic world and if his previous books are anything to go by this too will be a cracker. Fascinating period.

The great man himself with this sublime ‘piece’. Perfect for relaxing on a dreich Autumn night with a glass of red or a dram… give it a listen.

Recent addition to my photography book collection. Raymond Depardon’s wonderful 80 black-and-white photographic essay on the villages in the Mediterranean inland region of Southern France, taken in the summer of 2020 after the first COVID-19 lockdown. Sublime work.

Got to be one of the most hauntingly atmospheric albums of all time… can’t get enough of it.

I was like the proverbial kid in a sweet shop today at the @NatGalleriesSco exhibition of the work of Alfred Buckham. Early aviation, ‘Boys Own’ style adventure and above all magnificent photography. It doesn’t get any better.

This has come to pass…dangerous times indeed and a wake up call for us all.

World War Z and zombies, Fast and Furious cars, Indiana Jones, Spider Man and now transported back in time. It’s like Patrick McGoohan rolling back his house curtains in the TV series The Prisoner… I never know where I wake up in ‘Glasgow’.

Today marks 24th anniversary of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud. A remarkable guerrilla leader I had the privilege of meeting both during his fight against the Soviet occupiers and later the Taliban. He was quite a character. Check out Sandy Gall’s book ‘Afghan Napoleon’

Fantastic retrospective exhibition at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris of the work of Marie-Laure de Decker, who covered major conflicts like Vietnam, apartheid in South Africa, Chilean dictatorship, and anti colonial struggle in Chad pictured here. Great day out

Not a bad balcony view- familiar as it is - from one of our favourite bolt holes in Paris. Thundery and rainy night earlier, but shaping up now for a decent day tomorrow with a few galleries to visit. Some business but also pleasure. Watch this space on the latter.

With every social media post I read, those that should be totally behind the independence cause are now so preoccupied with petty/personal score settling, I can’t help feel the Scottish people are being sold down the river. Narcissism has replaced national aspiration. Pic Reuters

Is there a whiff of change in the air over the acceptance of a Palestinian state? After years of covering the conflict, my reflective essay published Sunday (tomorrow) in both @heraldscotland and @ScotNational explains where I believe things might be heading. Pic: Reuters.
