Hope is the belief that you can make things better, while optimism is the belief that things will get better. Hope is an active process that involves setting and working towards goals, while optimism is a passive thought pattern. Hope can help people endure challenges and motivate them to take action. For example, you might hope that a sports team you like will win even though you don't think they're likely to. Hopeful people tend to engage in "pathway thinking" and "agency thinking". "Pathway thinking" is the ability to come up with multiple ways to reach a goal. "Agency thinking" is the motivation to take action to reach those goals.
