City Councilman Theodore Weiss interrupted a joint council-legislative gun control hearing which he was chairing to announce that the American Nazi leader had been slain. “I WANT TO announce that George Lincoln Rockwell, a man whose philosophy I abhor, has been killed by a sniper’s bullet in Arlington, Va.,” he said tersely. Later he told newsmen the assassination “demonstrates the timeliness of this hearing.” “This violence has no political discrimination,” he said. “It hits the left and the right, the young and the old. This carnage has to be controlled. How much longer do we go on killing people senselessly?” The second column reads: Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld of Cleveland, national president of the American Jewish Congress, noted that after years of operation, Rockwell “never enrolled more than a handful of followers, attracted no support from any business, political, civic or religious leader and made no impact on American life.” “He was a nuisance rather than a menace to American institutions,” Rabbi Lelyveld said. “Having said this, we must express our abhorrence of violent acts as a solution to the social, religious or political issues of our time. We condemn the use of violence, even when it is directed against the enemies of democracy.” AUTHOR-EDITOR Harry Golden said in Charlotte, N. C., that he deplored the slaying because he deplores “violence regardless of who the victim is.” Mayor John V. Lindsay, an advocate of state and federal gun control legislation, said the killing was proof that “violence breeds violence and extremism breeds extremism.”
