West Germany - Northern Ireland 2-2, 2nd NI goal is missing, NI a man down because of injury for most of the match, yet only the marginally worse team, pretty eventful match with chances at both ends

Best players: Gregg, Rahn, Seeler, McIlroy, Juskowiak, Walter

Sweden - Hungary 2-1, frantic 2nd half but Sweden better in the 1st, Tichy with the finest long-range strike I've seen in the 1950s, Liedholm with a rather bad penalty miss, Grosics and Bozsik the only remaing HUN legends

Best players: Hamrin, Tichy, Bozsik, Skoglund

It almost feels like a con. "The BIG MATCH.... *whisper* which doesn't matter all that much".

On a country-level the downfall of Hungarian football after the suppressed revolution of 1956 continues to be felt. The Hungarian lead is quickly shrinking and the '58 WC alone might be sufficient for Brazil to catch up.

However, the Hungarian exiles are said to prepare a comeback...

Let's just say that there aren't that many players from my 2010-20 Team of the Decade that will also feature prominently in the 2015-25 edition. ;-)

I see no good reason to view his performances as anything less than all-time great. I'm obviously on the somewhat lower end of the 'Ronaldo's historical standing' estimation but I do still judge him to be a Top 20, probably Top 10 player in football history. An all-time great, in other words.

I mean, judging individuals in a team sports will never be not complicated. But at the same time, I see no good reason to view individual contributions as some kind of black box that you can only estimate by the next-best-counterfactual (basically the same team but without him). We saw him play and

Looks like the race is on.

One aspect in which Di Stefano has already surpassed Messi in my books is consecutive Player of the Season titles. Di Stefano has now won four in a row (54-55 to 57-58) while Messi has never achieved more than three after another (16-17 to 18-19). Overall, Messi still leads 7-4, though.

One thing that gets clear is that Di Stefano will at some point enter the GOAT debate in terms of my selections. He'll never reach Messi-levels but selections began when he was already 24.

Speaking of GOATs, we now enter a rare (unique?) stage in football history with two candidates active.

Doch, war er. Sogar noch ein bisschen expliziter als teilweise erste Anlaufstelle des Spielaufbaus aus der Abwehr, quasi wie ein Libero. Hat er nicht immer gemacht, aber manchmal.

I think his second half of the season, where he played as a false 9, was pretty good. Extremely mature, the kind of quality player that has a real influence on the major knockout ties.

And with this match, my project of watching all the available games from the 1957-58 season is over. @robfielder.bsky.social and I are in the middle of compiling a Team of the Season already.

Bobby Charlton is clearly the most complete and overall best player on the pitch. He lacks a bit of pace but apart from that does a superb Di Stefano impression: wearing the No.9 but spending most of his time between defensive and attacking midfield. That he will have a great career is obvious.

Strangely enough, the commentator not once mentions the fact that United have just been the subject oft the worst disaster for a football club since Superga. He even uses the language of tragedy, but only when it seems that United were losing their goalkeeper to injury for a second year in a row.

Bolton Wanderers - Manchester United 2-0, the FA Cup final shortly after the Munich air disaster, United start the match poorly and pay for it, Bolton with a strong defense, the second Bolton goal was scandalous

Best players: Charlton, Lofthouse, Hartle, Banks
