An excerpt of a fanfic that reads:

When Kevin asked where his mother went, the older man gave him a cutting look with those ink-black eyes.

"She's never coming back. Don't waste your prayers to the gods on people who've gone astray. Only the dead enters the underworld." Tetsuji said firmly as Kevin held his tongue back, learning far too young to never talk back to the likes of Moriayama.

Kevin was then shoved at the brutal heart of noble life with the Moriyamas. He endured plenty when he owed his life to the Moriyamas, but hope came through a whisper, a rumour.

Whispers of his missing mother's whereabouts in the underworld was all it took for him to leave everything behind. He escaped the grip the Moriyamas had on him at eighteen, with the grip of his own blade plunged into his chest, and bled himself to death. Only the dead enters the underworld.

It was not the honourable kind of death he'd yearned as a child, but it was enough.

That was the last time he'd seen the sky, and breathed the soothing air of the world above.
