There was really only one conclusion that Norton could come to as a result. Norton stood up and opened his arms, to which Edgar’s eyebrows pinched up in confusion before something clicked in his head, expression immediately flattening into disdain. “No.” “Come here.” “No–!” Too late. Edgar, for all of his denial, didn’t really make an effort to resist or run away, before Norton practically draped himself over Edgar into a loose embrace of sorts. Well, actually, he wasn’t really sure what to call what he was doing, because it wasn’t quite hugging him and if anything, was more like he was crushing the shorter man under his weight. (Whatever it was, it was kind of nice and cozy. Edgar was barely the right height for him to place his chin on his head, tucking the smaller in underneath his larger figure.)

Then, it hit Norton, slowly pointing a finger at Edgar with a raised eyebrow. “Are you sulking?” “Excuse me?” “You’re pouting.” “You should know better that my neutral expression is like this due to the curvature of my lips, it does not mean I’m sulking–” “Yeah but you’re actually pouting ‘cause you’re jealous.” Bullseye. Edgar's eyes widened, mildly alarmed, before he quickly schooled his expression, although the red of his ears gave it away.

"That’s not–” Edgar closed his eyes and let out a familiar exhausted sigh. “Listen, I need you to focus here for a moment, because that was the first time I saw you like… that.” (Broken? Torn down? There were a lot of ways for Norton to describe how he was, but he held back because none of those descriptors sound good, and that would bog down the painter more. Couldn’t do that. He didn’t like it when Edgar was tired to the point that the light to his eyes would simmer like that.) After that, a moment of silence drifted by as he stared at Edgar for a bit, who continued to look at the floor with furrowed eyebrows. He still looked like he was hugging himself, making him much smaller than how he normally held himself. “We can throw around words like ‘mutual trust’ and whatever poetic nonsense about relationships but by the end of it, you were weak, shut me off, and if you woke up without something or someone to ground you, then you’d be no better than another corpse in my bed.” Oh, well that… Huh, he wasn’t quite sure how to process the flurry of emotions that Edgar didn’t even seem to realize made Norton feel. (There was worry, a bit of guilt, something along the lines of happiness, and… something he didn’t want to admit.) How was he even supposed to unpack any of this? Was he even supposed to unpack any of this? Because from the looks of how Edgar was looking anywhere but him, the painter didn’t even look like he unpacked any of those emotions either.

"You trust Subedar.” There goes Edgar stating something like it’s the most obvious answer again. Guess he would have to try to follow along with whatever direction the conversation was being carried towards before Norton could get his answer to why Naib was dragged into this mess of a situation. “Well, yeah, I do, but I trust you too… yeah.” Edgar raised an eyebrow at that, clearly picking up on the implications of Norton almost adding on “at least I think I do.” The painter then harrumphed when Norton made no effort to defend himself. (Why would he? It’s not like he could fool either of them.) “Yes, you trust me, but your trust with Subedar is different,” Edgar huffed, tone as matter-of-fact and blunt as usual. “Subedar knows what happened to you yesterday, and he clearly knows how to handle that in a way that I wouldn’t be able to.” (“So you thought that I needed Naib more than I needed you?” is what Norton would like to say because he could clearly track Edgar’s thought process there but like hell he could say that. The idea that Edgar thought he was this vulnerable was mortifying enough, being able to actually admit it was… He couldn’t.)

And Edgar, being the defensive person that he is, crossed his arms with an equally annoyed glare. “Well too bad. Quips aside, have the both of you only been gossiping about me?” “What, were you expecting something when you basically dragged me over here?” “Yes, actually. If you couldn’t even understand that during the moment I left the two of you alone, then you’ve lost purpose in being in my room.” “What in the–” And just like that, Naib was promptly kicked out. Seriously, they were about the same height, but how did Edgar manage to manhandle a trained-mercenary like that? Rhetorical question really. Despite how prickly Naib was, he never found it in himself to actually commit any form of violence or put up any resistance against others really. Unless there was feasible danger in place, Naib was genuinely kind of too nice for his own good. Meanwhile, Edgar on the other hand… “You let a stranger into the sanctity of your own room and he can’t even get the job done.”

Naib slouched in the chair, looking just a bit more grumpy now that Norton stole a portion of his meal, grunting, “I don’t know. I was grabbing a meal when Mr. Painter here blocked my way. Something about ‘I’ll let you eat in peace if you come to my room’ or something like that? At first, I was ready to punch him but then I remembered you guys are like… whatever you two are so I stopped and thought about how weird it was that he was holding food hostage to make me go to his room.” He then gestured to Norton. “So I followed along and that’s when I saw you here. Trust me, I don’t get it as much as you do, but he gave me my food back after I settled down and we haven’t exchanged a word since.” “Typical Edgar,” Norton muttered under his breath.

"If you need another way to ground yourself then just imagine Valden pinging ‘thank you’ at you.” Almost immediately Norton felt annoyed at remembering how Edgar even went out of his way to stick his tongue out at him while passing by the last time they had a match together. “That’s not a grounding method, that’s just reminding me that I have more laundry to get through because he can’t clean up after himself for the life of him.” “But it works, right?” Naib had the nerve to give a cheeky grin, but the confident sight in front of him allowed him to reel in his thoughts a bit more. “... Thanks.”

Of course, the manor found a way to make everything worse, because the system just had to find ways to let him sink deeper into the void that is dejavu hell. It wasn’t anything new. In fact, Norton was constantly more aware of every dejavu moment he had with Edgar constantly buzzing around him than he was pre-Edgar, but it was never anything this unpleasant, but then again, maybe the sign that something this heartrending was there all along. He did understand a long, long time ago that he was neither the world’s nor the manor’s favorite child, but goddamn… The tracks, the railcarts, the tunnels, and ladders…

"Fucking…” Sitting at the edge of his bed, his head hung low, Edgar buried his face into his hands, tugging and pulling at his bangs and fringes. There was no high or mighty aristocrat in sight, just a deeply hurt human who couldn’t put any care into how he looked. “Wow, those are some serious curses you’re putting out there,” Norton remarked as he casually made his way over to Edgar, earning a tired glare from the latter. “What do you want?” That was an unfair question. He acknowledged how deceptively simple the question should be, but this was Edgar. Always packing too much into a much too curt question. There was no way for Norton to answer that, and there was no way for Edgar to take any answer. So, instead of answering, Norton sat beside Edgar with a small huff, before reaching out to pull Edgar’s crumpled figure into his side, firmly patting Edgar’s shoulder. It wasn’t much to offer, but it was enough for them. (Enough for Edgar to stop dragging paint into his hair and onto his face along with angry red marks. His tenseness gave away slightly.)

Still, Melly stood her place, placing a hand over her heart. “Maybe you believe that there is nothing to save, and that I am no longer necessary in your life, but I want you to know… I need you to know that no matter what, I still care. I genuinely mean that with all of my heart. There is no wish to return to the past, just… I just want to reassure you that while I failed you once, if ever you need help, I will be there for you.” Edgar’s eyebrow twitched, gaze hardening at the words Melly just promised. “Sure, glaze over those words with all of the honey you want and once your little bee is caught, we both know you’ll be the first to leave.” Before Melly could get another word in, Edgar promptly stormed back into the depths of his room.

Before the conversation could go further, Norton had to interrupt ever-so gracefully with an, “uh, listen, this is starting to sound really personal so how about I step out–” Norton could barely register that Edgar held onto his hand before immediately catching himself and pulling away just as quickly. Huh. That was definitely new. “If it soothes your heart any more, then I would be… willing to have Campbell join in as well.” (Wow. That near-gagging mid-sentence she did definitely took the cake in being the rudest thing Melly has done to Norton. And she used her bees to shove him straight into the hunter before.) “That’s not–!” the fight immediately extinguished with how utterly embarrassed Edgar looked, the tip of his ears matching his beret. “Listen, I’m not in the mood to hear any excuses you have, and I never will be. Stop acting like there’s something to save and stop acting like you have any right to come back into my life. I’ve moved on just like you have, so just… hurry up and leave.” (Yeah, definitely too personal even when Norton was missing some desperately needed context in this situation, but he really was an unwilling audience at this point. (Or was it willing if just that fleeting touch was enough to lock Norton in place? Definitely not something he needed to think about in this situation either.))

“I supposed that the rumors are true then? That this is normal?” Melly gestured towards Norton’s general silhouette, leaning against the paint-stained door casually. Luckily, she clearly wasn’t here to fight Norton, but there was a thinly disguised wary tone to her voice, as though she couldn’t believe that the rumors of Norton and Edgar basically living in each other’s rooms was true. With how their relationship has been though, it didn’t take much for Norton to figure that she wasn’t upset about whatever relationship Norton and Edgar have, more-so the fact that Norton was involved in Edgar’s life. (Seriously, what was up with this older sister attitude Melly has? And why do all of the aristocrats connect back to Edgar somehow? The Valdens were seriously that much of a big wig family?) He wasn’t quite sure how to react to Melly’s attitude, brushing it off with a casual shrug. “Kinda, sorta. Anyways, what do you need?” A beat of silence, before he could barely make out a sigh from behind her mask. “I was hoping to discuss with Edgar about a certain topic, but if I’m intruding on something–”

Something was starting to give with the atmosphere around the two, not like either of them would be willing to touch on it or be able to define it in a way that made sense, but it was a nice(?) give as far as they were (or at least, Norton was aware of). Sure there were still the stilted moments, like when Norton felt a bit on edge whenever he caught a whiff of something vaguely metallic in Edgar’s room, or when Edgar’s gaze would linger on him whenever he did something strenuous to his body— but something was different. The concern they shared for the other didn’t feel as backhanded as before, making them even an iota more conscious of their own actions as human beings. More fresh bandages here, a quick nap there, (leaning on his shoulder to paint here, gently pressing his hand against his paint-stained one as though ready to hold it there).

And he really didn’t like the doting gaze Mary was giving them from above and god forbid Margie’s perturbed expression because he was less than ready to answer any of the 20 questions that were definitely buzzing around in the dancer’s head. Excuses, excuses… “He started it.” “What in the– How much more immature can you get, Campbell?!” It was silly and petty and stupid— all of Edgar’s favorite vocabulary could be used to describe the situation, but it was nice. This nonsensical familiarness gave a sort of comfort to Norton, that let him feel just a bit more okay than before, grinning slyly as Edgar chased him around the building as they bickered with each other.

"What the hell was that for you bastard?!” With that shout Edgar gave an emphatic tug at the hair from underneath his helmet, knocking it off of his head as Norton could definitely tell that the menace was trying to give him a bald spot. “Yup, being so angry that it looks like you’ve just popped five blood vessels suits you best.” Whatever expression Edgar saw somehow immediately soothed the painter, as his indignant expression immediately flattened into that familiar mix of exhaustion and annoyance (with a hint of fondness? He wasn’t sure, but the painter’s body was more relaxed than before). Frowning, Edgar switched from yanking at Norton’s hair to pinching his face and tugging at his cheeks. “Wipe that stupid grin off of your face— and hurry up and put me down. What you just did wasn’t even part of ballroom etiquette.” “Indeed, but it was quite adorable~.” Right. They weren’t alone.

"Let’s just get out of here.” Edgar froze, his joints locking up in place as he peered up at Norton in confusion. “And bleed out instead of getting chaired? No thank you.” “Yeah, but this is getting to you.” And Norton would’ve yelled up at Mary that the two of them were going to head off, however he felt Edgar’s grip go tense, expression darkening as he stared at Norton's shoulder. “It’s better than watching you bleed out onto the ground.”

If Norton, when he first entered the manor, was told that he would be forced into dancing lessons taught by the previously executed queen of France, Norton would vaguely think that that person was having a stroke. (And then he would have asked if he could take that person’s belongings and money after they passed away.) Yet, here was Norton, doing ballroom lessons with Edgar as his partner in the two-story building of Moonlit River Park, Mary happily clapping along as poor, half-beaten Lucky limped along with Margie and her musicbox.

As much as he would lecture Norton about portraying “reality,” that he hated painting “fabricated beauty,” he clearly found beauty in life. As much as he saw others as vicious predators waiting to break down the weakest of people, he found beauty regardless. True to his words, he would paint the scars of others with uncomfortable detail and realness, but those scars were never glorified or pitied, never consumed the person’s story or thrown into the background. It was a part of them, told a part of their identity, a part of their story, but that was normal. It was their normal. It wasn’t the most beautiful, but there was beauty to be found with that strange mundanity of theirs. Norton raised his hand up to the ceiling, for once, somehow not overly conscious of the discolored burn scars that littered across his skin, and mumbled to himself in thought. “It’s for me to decide, huh?” He wasn’t really sure how much he agreed with that part of Edgar’s message, but he took a guilty liking to Edgar declaring that the scars represent only one part of a person, not a person as a whole.

edgar puts so much importance in art that he cant perceive himself without art. he thinks its the only thing worthy in his existence.. so norton has to remind him that hes human too. he has an existence outside of art
"You’re taking the saying of ‘living for art’ too literally.” That struck some sort of nerve, as Edgar let out a short scoff and rolled his eyes, pulling his wrist out of Norton’s ghost-of-a-grasp. “There’s no point to life if there is no art.” And before the blue of those eyes could dull out, Norton reached out and pinched Edgar’s nose, once again earning a glare from the painter. “Human.” “What?” Norton couldn’t help but emphasize each word as he pointed a finger at Edgar’s forehead. “You are human.” There was mild amusement to be found in how quickly Edgar’s expression changed. From furrowed brows and a twitching mouth like he was going to actually bite his finger off, to wide-eyed bewilderment, before his mouth was drawn into a thin line, a storm of some sort being kicked up behind those normally dreary eyes. How uncharacteristic of Edgar to be speechless for once though, but Norton figured it was only fair since he was already acting out of it in Edgar’s overly-perceptive eyes.

Then, Edgar slowly and quietly continued, “Maybe others would see them as the trophies of a victorious hero or wounds of a tragic survivor, but they’re stupid. To me, those scars are complex, but they are a part of your life, not your legacy as a person. I see them, and I know it’s you. They don’t represent you, nor are they you, only a part of you. Regardless, how you decide to perceive that part of you should never be painted over by the lies of others.”

The disgusting egoists will want to powder their scars up in make-up and view their weaknesses as ugly, and then project all of their own self-hatred onto others.” His expression then softened. “And then, I suppose, there are people like you. “Unsure how to feel the scars that paint their bodies. Viewing their scars as neither pretty, nor ugly. Sure, they’re proof that you survived, and that you’ve come so far in your life that it’s admirable, but without a doubt, they’re reminders to the pain and sorrow you undeniably felt, engraved into your skin like how they’ve been ingrained into your mind. Neither something to flaunt, nor something to hide in shame, but you learn to live with it. Whether people try to mold you into an unstoppable warrior, or someone to hide in shame, it doesn’t change the fact that what you experienced shaped who you are today. It’s raw, but it’s you, a human, that is both strong and weak.”

Like you’ve overcome the worst.” . “Well, they tell so much about what someone has gone through, so you can’t help but feel sad for them.” . “For many warriors, scars are signs of victory, no?” . “They’re something to hide. It’s always proof of some ugly truth you want no one to find out about.” ) Edgar, instead of some thoughtful, distant hum or hesitation, gave the most deadpan tone of voice as he replied— and to say that he even sounded mildly irked would be an exaggeration with how indifferent his tone was. “I have no opinions of them and even if I did, they wouldn’t completely overturn how you see them.”
