Overall though, this IS a really good comic. It's got some of the best stories Marvel was publishing in this era, great art by Jack Kirby, and some genuinely clever and funny dialogue by Stan Lee. It's well worth a read. (5/5)

Also, I think this book got weaker as it went on. While it's still pretty good, it does get a little less interesting towards the end of the sixties. Characters kind of settled into their roles and made the drama less interesting, while recurring villains could get a bit repetitive. (4/5)

If there's one thing i really didn't like about this book, it's that Sue is often downplayed or left out of the team's adventures entirely. While it's sometimes understandable, such as when she was pregnant with franklin, it's some just because Reed is being paternalistic for no real reason. (3/5)

there's a lot of great things about fantastic four, but if i had to narrow it down to three things that really make the book tick, i'd say it's cool and imaginative technology, exciting action scenes, and great character dynamics. (2/5)

Fantastic Four (1961) issues 1 through 102 - This is the comic started the marvel universe, and it's easy to see why it was such a hit. there's a lot of cool and exciting stuff here! A lot of really important staples of the marvel universe debut in the first few years of this comic, it's crazy (1/5)

Agatha Harkness's introduction is so good

also i was wrong before, they were wearing yellow and blue in the hulk issue. they were only on one page and i read it last night so i guess i forgot

it is worth noting that these have the inward torso taper from the second outfits, unlike in cap's book. so it's still inconsistent
September 26, 2025 at 11:22 PM
ok apparently i spoke too soon, they DO address this... in really vague terms in one narration box. so i guess there is a lore reason for this, even if i kinda suspect it was concocted to cover for some artistic license/errors.

after a brief appearance in The Incredible Hulk that had their costumes right, a crossover with Captain America has once again fucked up and put the X-Men back in the yellow and blue costumes that they were supposed to have abandoned seven years ago at this point.
September 26, 2025 at 10:24 PM
and again they shouldn't be wearing the first OR second costumes, as both have been out of use for several years.

the interior artist was at least aware of this however, as their appearance inside the issue depicts them in their most recent costumes from the end of their own now-cancelled book
September 26, 2025 at 3:30 AM
this cover is yet another *different* mashup of x-men uniforms, with full-red belts to more closely match their second costumes, and mayyybe the inward taper of the yellow section as well (it's hard to tell bc of the angle). But Jean has the rounded hood that was never worn with the second costume!
September 26, 2025 at 3:27 AM
These costumes combine elements from both the 1st and 2nd X-Men costumes, mixing the torso from the first with the red logo on the buckle from the second. Additionally, Jean's headpiece is from the 2nd costume, but has been occasionally drawn on the first; either way, it should be blue, not yellow!

Not only had the X-Men not worn these costumes in 5 years at this point, but the note about Hank is wrong; he had a concurrent solo adventure, but it was in Amazing Adventures, not Astonishing Tales!
September 26, 2025 at 12:32 AM
this is a funny way to address that the x-men book got cancelled and now the characters haven't shown up in a couple years
September 25, 2025 at 6:14 PM
they have that shit on fr ngl

People glaze Claremont a lot fir revitalizing the X-Men, and rightfully so, but I think it gets overlooked how much groundwork was laid here by guys like Roy Thomas, Werner Roth, and Neal Adams (to name a very select few; there were a lot of name coming in and out of this book). (2/2)

X-Men (1963) issues 1 through 66 - This is a bit of a mixed bag, this series struggles with identity a lot but I think when it hits its stride it can be pretty fun. I get why people overlook this run and prefer to jump to the 70s but at the same time I think there is something special here. (1/2)

it's a shame they weren't crediting colorists in this era bc whoever they were, they were doing great work in these issues
September 23, 2025 at 5:18 AM
with that said these neal adams issues are incredible though
September 23, 2025 at 1:51 AM
one cool thing about x-men being a bit of revolving door of creators is that occasionally you get to see some really cool early work by guys like Neal Adams
