Complete as of August 08, 2025! Notes: Back with my first AU! Not the first one I’ve started, but it’s the first one I’m (finally!) finishing. Work and whatnot have taken up a lot of my headspace these past few weeks, and I’ve been banging my head against some serious writer’s block… but this morning I randomly broke through it, and it was less a writer’s block and more a writer’s dam, and now my desk is all flooded. In any case, welcome to Instinctual! I’m dipping my toes into the alpha/beta/omegaverse, but have also ignored like half the rules and filled in way too many of my own, ha. Hopefully the story provides enough context on its own, but to state a few things ahead of time: 1. This is a five-tier system: There are Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, but also Prime Alphas and Prime Omegas, which are much more extreme. 2. Mating bites are not permanent; they last about a year. They also require a bite from both people to work. 3. People have both surface-scents (unique to each person) and under-scents (a heavier version of the surface-scent, with characteristics unique to each secondary gender). You can’t tell a person’s secondary gender from their surface-scent, but you can tell from their under-scent. Scent-blockers block the latter, not the former.
