In reality they’re just making fools of themselves and causing real harm to themselves and others in ways they likely do not understand or are even aware of, and attempting to consider this triggers a knee-jerk “no” reaction.

The anti-AI hysteria has precisely the same dynamics driving it.

They believe so strongly they refuse to accept or even consider any evidence to the contrary. They grow distrustful of science and math as a whole and insulate themselves from critical thought. It makes them feel part of a larger community and as if they’re standing up for some important cause.

People see/are “taught” and misunderstand something and assume it speaks for how the whole concept works, and then refuse or are unable to comprehend the rest. Subsequently they fall into a designed rabbit hole of disinformation which they strongly believe in, ie the myth of “vaccines cause autism.”

It doesn’t help that pretty much all of the media, including otherwise competent tech journalists, are straight-up lying about the AI industry for sensationalism and clickbait. Rage is profitable for them. The reality isn’t as much.

Further, it’s devolving to the point of a delusional hysteria over an imagined world which doesn’t exist. Tech literacy and economic literacy need improvement.

If you’re going to panic and worry about something, actually take the time to seriously learn about that thing and what its real world impact and limitations are.

Uncited social media posts do not count as research. The disinformation about gen AI is as unhinged as the facebook antivax nonsense.
