Communities being occupied is nothing new to African Americans. An irony that we have long endured — armed surveillance, economic containment, and state neglect — is now expanding to encompass poor white and brown communities, and, in a final irony, America itself.

José "Cha Cha" Jiménez (born August 8, 1948) is a political activist and the founder of the Young Lords Organization, a Chicago-based street gang that became a civil and human rights organization. Started in September 23, 1968. He’ll be missed.

There was a time I carried my Nikkormat camera everywhere, always with a 28mm lens, and a 200mm. It was all I needed. Probably from my first anti-police brutality protest. I got attacked. Stay mobile, light. I was 15. Chicago, uptown. By the time I was 20, I left the country. I had a skill.
