"Do you dance a lot?" "No, not unless forced," he hummed, then after a pause added, "Or if I want to get close to a pretty girl." That was certainly the most direct admission yet, but even then, her doubts helpfully supplied that Emeric regularly flirted with little substance behind it. Regardless, it made her heart jump into her throat and she pressed her face against his chest in a move simultaneously cowardly and far too bold. "Oh my god, shut up," she said weakly, her voice muffled. In response, he separated their hands just for his own to find a new dwelling on the curve of her hips. There was a fondness to the way he chuckled that made her stomach wrench. "Cute," she heard him say quietly, as though it hadn't been meant to be voiced out loud. Gloria was afraid of what she might say if given the chance to open her mouth, so she simply looped her arms around his neck and hid her face against him. There were so many reasons that this shouldn't work. But feeling him wrapped around her quenched an ache that had become so constant she hadn't registered it until she felt its vacancy. Fingertips dipping into her flesh as though to anchor himself there; her breath against his collar shaky and hopeful. Such a novel cocktail of sensations that she realized she had been deprived of, perhaps deprived herself of, that made her feel a little more human when melding with his heat. How had she not known that such affection could make her feel whole if she had just let it? A man who was not even human fit against her so naturally, like it had been preordained. Otherwise, how could his strange edges complete hers so neatly? The odds were so slim that for a brief moment, Gloria reconsidered her lack of faith. "I'm glad that I ended up here," she admitted, pulling back with thoughts of probabilities far more romantic than they should be, "I was originally supposed to be on our sister ship. But the Amaryllis was leaving sooner and I just needed to be gone." Emeric tensed. "I did not know that, which one?" Not the Asphodel—the ship transporting the founder in cryosleep to the most optimal candidate. She was thankful for that. The Asphodel had fallen to some unknown demise early on in its journey. Khloris only knew from piecing together fragments of telemetry data that had been streamed back, and had informed her to emphasize the importance of the Amaryllis' success now that there were only two. As far as the rest of the Amaryllis crew was concerned, their ivory sister was still drifting peacefully among the stars. "The Anemone," she answered, before knitting her brows. He had asked which one. Had she mentioned more than one? "It's heading to the Lyra Quadrant." Not that their human labels for space cartography would mean anything to him. "I am relieved you are not there," he said, but there was an undertone to his voice that coincided with the way his fingers stiffened. It was subtle, but Gloria had spent weeks interpreting his body language in lieu of verbal communication; even sans normal human expressions, she had become versed in Emeric. She recognized the way his antennae fluttered ever so slightly when he was pleased, the way his posture slackened when he was feeling overconfident, how his lack of expression betrayed him that he was concealing unpleasant thoughts. Gloria might not have been an expert in Saturniians, but she had come to know him well enough that her she could not ignore the lead in her gut. "What do you mean?" Emeric blinked, then lifted a hand to brush against her cheek. "Because you are here, thus I was able to meet you." He said it with the same intonation he took on when he miscalculated and captured one of her informant pieces in Mellilae. Starlight filled the new distance between them. "Why are you lying to me?" She asked directly—she had no proof but her intuition. Those self preservation instincts nagged at her once again. "Why do you think I am lying to you?" Gloria frowned at him, suddenly the atmosphere between them having flipped on its head entirely. It was so jarring that she felt sober all at once. "Why can't you just be straightforward with me for once? You didn't answer my question."

Her quarters were standard issue and matched the other two hundred living abodes on the ship, but the last five years had transformed it into as much of a home as any. Off-white painted walls and warm wooden furniture cushioned the impossibly black set of windows while they traveled through space. Now those panes displayed the luscious magentas and sleepy indigos of this new world, the crew scattering around her soil like a barrage of ants unleashed upon a forgotten morsel. Gloria had chosen not to personalize it further—but it was less out of desire and more that she was too overwhelmed to know where to even begin. Besides, the room was comfortable and pragmatic; the default decor of floral prints and vases prevented it from feeling sparse. Enough for her to relax in after interfacing with people all day.

In Deli's defense, this was Clover's fault this time. Not only was her skirt so short that they could built a monument to the exposed skin of her thighs, but it hiked up further when she deposited herself in their lap. Truly, they were studying the stupid material that Lilou and Conrad insisted was so vital to their education. But Clover was a needy thing who took personal offense to their mismatched eyes roving over the dusty pages of a book and not her. She whined, she pouted, until finally she pushed her way between the chair and the desk. Honestly, were they supposed to not sink their fingers into her thighs? Deli would like to meet the individual with that kind of will power.

This was, she supposed, somewhat of an important event. And Gloria would prefer not to rely on something as fickle as memory with all of its clumsy gaps and attempts to pad them. One of her notebooks was still lying in arms' reach on the couch, so she pulled it into her lap, flipping to a random section free from ink, and began to write out a quick minutes outline so that she could at least be prepared to memorialize this conversation either for history or even just the next day when it didn't feel quite real. "Oh," Emeric blinked innocuously, "I am the highest ranking individual from our group. But there seems to be a misunderstanding, we are not native to this planet." Not native to this planet. Before, she had been in a mode of note taking where she would record what she was hearing without truly processing it. She stared at the words on the page then looked up at Emeric with wide eyes, feeling her brows then knitting together. "What? What do you mean?" He looked at her with a slight tilt of his chin, as though it was her hearing that was at fault here. "Exactly what I said. We arrived on this planet approximately twenty days before you did." Out of all the spanning timelines in the galaxy, they had arrived here. In this insignificant point in the cosmos, at the same time as another group of aliens, time and space overlapping in what had to be an astronomically low chance. The news that there was intelligent life on this planet alone was a lot to digest, but this revelation was a feast compared to the small morsel they had consumed before. With this brought other details that would rip apart their understanding. Where and what their home planet was like—and how did they get here?

"This is for you," he said, and pushed a neat stack of paper into her hands, "I managed to get you everything that you asked for. Everything is detailed in the preliminary agreement document." It was a thick stack of paper. And to her knowledge, Saturniians did not have paper like this, especially aboard their transport vessel. Which meant that Emeric had to go out of his way to not only translate the document into English, but to then find a way to print it out on her ship. Carefully, she began flipping through the pages. There were highlighted sections, the waver to the bright neon lines having been done by hand. And color coded. Little plastic tabs matching the highlighted colors peeking out from the edge of the document. She had no idea how he managed to do it, but here it was. It was tailor made for her. "Did my leads help you?" She asked quietly, trying to find a single fault with the formatting, as if that could justify holding onto her disdain if she could just find one misplaced comma or misaligned header. Emeric chuckled. "Clarine embezzled your office supplies at my request. But otherwise, no. I think I know you well enough by now to know some of your preferences." Gloria finally met his eyes at that, her chest tightening. "I guess you do. So, it was that easy then? Once I blackmailed your entire planet?" She said with a sardonic smile. His inhale held an unspoken tension that he released slowly through his flat nose, before he distracting himself with the way the light refracted off the water. "I would not say it was easy," he said slowly, "And there is a condition that you may not like."

"Oh," Emeric laughed, resting one hand on the chair behind her, "I think we both know that is not true. This pull is mutual. I am not foolish nor strong enough to act as though I am blind to it." Her breath felt shallow. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears so loudly that she could feel her pulse in her fingertips. A torrent of emotion tore through her, a riptide of wanting that she had built sandcastle poor defenses against. Especially when he had captured her gaze and was relentless in keeping it. And once again he was touching her and once again she was letting him because she was so weak to it with her touch starved desire—his fingers fluttered against her hip, waiting for her to take her turn. "What if you're wrong?" She asked, her voice a murmur. "I am not." He was not. Gloria's resolve melted to the heat of him. It wasn't romantic—it wasn't even gentle. It was the cork popping under pressure. She pulled him down, her nails none too considerate on the skin of his nape, at the same time that she strained on her tiptoes. They collided as she yanked him down, crushing her lips to his. That must have been enough to spur him past whatever holds he had placed on himself, because Emeric was pulling her in by her waist and kissing her back as though he had been parched before her dam crumbled. His lips were thin, but warm and eager. Dull pain melded with the pressure, mostly on her part; she kissed him like she was trying to agitate him into combat. Emeric pulled back to catch his breath, only to spend it on a whisper. "Finally," he said, so low, so fulfilled. His lips brushed hers again, more tenderly this time, before she pulled him back into her intensity.

Her mouth parted. Then her teeth landed on her bottom lip, trapping the defensive response before it could meet the air and take shape. She had flung enough careless barbs at Selene. Who had never handled them with anything but utmost grace. Her stomach wrenched. Gloria felt like more an ant than a person, squirming under Selene's gaze as though under a magnifying glass. But if she wanted to be a person, she needed to shed these layers of falsehoods and omissions. She had to rip off all that grime that had hooked onto her skin—that she had cowardly justified as armor. And it hurt to tear down her defenses, her chest constricting. But it was time to expose those little crevices of her heart she had hidden away to the light. "Because I thought I could handle it myself." Gloria's words lacked the fire that would normally lash out at her opponents as a thoughtless shield. Selene was not her enemy. "If it went south, I didn't want to drag anyone else down with me."

"Actually yes," Emeric said, walking alongside her, "I abhor these suits. They make my hair terribly flat and they are so stuffy." It was starting to become clear why he was running around a new planet without protective gear. "Right. A bad hair day is worse than getting drugged up on cave gas," Gloria muttered, tapping in her identification number on the last field of the form. The screen stuttered as she tried to submit the request. She groaned, jabbing at the grayed out button with her finger until a confirmation box appeared with their vehicle number. "Finally." Gloria led him over to the vehicle, a modest two seater with an optimistic solar panel on its roof. She pulled the passenger door open for him with little fanfare. "I'm driving. Get in." She slipped into the front seat and watched out of the corner of her eye as he had to fold himself in. He fit, just barely, but his knees were practically up to his chest. His size hadn't been a consideration when she had picked out the vehicle, but she wasn't sure that the others would be any more comfortable an experience for him. Emeric didn't seem to mind or was too polite to say so, settling his arm against the window as though he could mold himself against it for more space. "Oh, you drive this? Fascinating. Is that safe?" "No, I take my life into my hands every time I drive just for fun," she bit back at him, adjusting the rear view mirror, "What do you think?"

Her stomach was starting to feel nauseated, so she changed the subject. "What is your home world like?" "It has its flaws, but there is so much beauty," Emeric said, and it was an earnestness that she hadn't seen from him before, "The surface has an abundance of hot springs formed out of craters, but the mountains are breathtaking as well. The capital city, where I live, it is overly crowded and infested with insufferable bureaucrats, but it is where everything happens. It is alive in its own way, especially at night." "It sounds amazing," Gloria marveled, nearly forgetting to take her turn while trying to visualize his descriptions, "You don't like bureaucrats?" Hearing a snort from him was amusingly natural. He tapped at one of his cylinder pieces, then smiled lazily at her. "They are awful creatures. I would know, I am one." Gloria frowned. He was adding more pieces to a puzzle that she hadn't figured out how to even arrange the border on yet. "You are? Why are you here then? I thought you were the head of the research team?" "I am," Emeric agreed, stretching his arms out behind his head before settling back into a lounge, "I am the director for the project. Just because you manage people does not mean you necessarily share their skills," he said pointedly and she understood, intimately, "I got thrown here by my father both to do his work and to get rid of me for a while." "Daddy issues?" She smirked, and watched his antennae bounce. "There is something lost in translation there, but I am going to assume that was denigrating," he grinned at her, "So probably, yes."
