Planet Mercury in the background with its grey, cratered, pockmarked surface. In the foreground are some spacecraft parts. Of all the galaxies in this frame, one pair stands out in particular: a smooth golden galaxy encircled by a nearly complete ring. This curious configuration is the result of gravitational lensing, in which the light from a distant object is warped and magnified by the gravity of a massive foreground object, like a galaxy or a cluster of galaxies. o understand how materials age beyond Earth’s atmosphere, up to 141 samples are spending a minimum of six months exposed to outer space for the Euro Material Ageing experiment on the International Space Station. The image shows samples with bare surfaces of 20 millimetres cramped between two aluminium plates. The diverse palette in this image shows novel metallic glasses, ceramic composites, silicon, diamond-like carbon, carbon fibres and plastics, among others. This image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission on 9 January 2025, shows the Palisades fire at lower left and the Eaton fire at upper right, with smoke seen reaching Catalina Island and the Santa Barbara reserve to the south of the fires.
