Tonight I can't get this poem out of my head:

Once, when I was in a glut of pain,
I said to a friend
Just take an hour and imagine
this is happening to you.

She looked straight ahead
and said, I don't want to. (Ellen Bass, Experiment in Empathy)

Can't wait to dive into the fabulous @quillkukla.bsky.social's new book "S*x Beyond 'Yes'" - a much-needed corrective to the tendency for feminist discourse on s*x to focus exclusively on how straight women can avoid terrible s*x, not on what sexual agency actually involves and how we can build it.

As into what Santa Cruz public transit claims to be serving as anyone, but showing up on time would be even better

Writing this, with no apologies or effusive "thank you!!" attached, brought me joy.

Hot take but the Greatest Philosophy Conference of All Time would surely not happen in Indiana

Are we living through an attention crisis? And what does that mean in the first place?

Just designed a seminar on the philosophy (and psychology) of the attention crisis - excited to explore all these pieces! 1/2

My new article, "Calling Trauma, Elite Capture, and Hermeneutical Injustice," is out in Phil Quarterly!

It's a deeply personal project, drawing on family history to examine how privileged groups use claims of trauma to control narratives and to suggest a new way to think of epistemic injustice. 🧵

Finally, the contact lenses we all need to doomscroll safely! (Ad reads: feel the satisfaction of feeling nothing)

Yesterday, protesting in Lisbon against touristification. The area where the march happened is now over 70% AirBnBs, while anyone on a Portuguese salary is pushed out and sees little of the “economic benefits of tourism”.

One important point to debunk: thought the far right is especially popular in poor rural and suburban areas, they actually get a good amount of their vote from people with college degrees (more than the Communists and the center left, actually).

The Trumpian far right party Chega on its own *draws* with the center left (think UK's Labor, the Democrats in the US), who hemorrhaged about 20 MPs. The far right won about 1/5 of districts (in blue), primarily historically working class, left wing ones.

Seeing very little on last night's Portuguese elections, and some clueless takes affirming "the world is rejecting Trumpism", so TLDR: very bad news, the right has over 2/3 of Parliament, meaning they could trigger a constitutional revision on their own and also change key judicial norms. 1/

Just went to the book talk for this and have been thinking about the ethical power of multi-voice oral histories. They really can make a community the protagonist, while narrative structure usually encourages individualism (the hero on a quest model). @caroderobertis.bsky.social

Accidentally learned how to make DeepSeek uncomfortable...It/They gave me about 10 examples (including about contemporary China!), then suddenly all disappeared and I got this very coy answer.

Adding the most up-to-date schedule, with a couple of small changes :)

Extremely stoked to be organizing this conference highlighting philosophy done from queer perspectives at UC Santa Cruz this April! Especially glad to still have this happen given, you know... everything. Registration here, with a remote option: forms.gle/bhPt4xQ2jR5q...
