I have seen a variety of speculations. Some were saying there was a lack of sufficiently good training data for GPT 5 even before GPT 4 and GPT 4 would be the last one for a while until a better way of creating synthetic data was worked out.

Reality is probably a number of factors at play.

Right, but for the masses a moral argument is very limited in effecting behavior. I believe the saying goes, "You can only save the world if the economics makes sense."
