It has native xbox controller support. The steam input stuff is super wonky and I believe they designed entirely around the steam deck controller. Try it out with it off and the controls will probably feel more natural

You have to disable steam input for this game in the game properties. After that you can configure buttons in game plus the haptics will work as intended. Idk why they went with a steam input method as default when it is objectively bad
