Mirrored plaque the size of a U.S. automobile license plate, partially painted in black. The remaining mirrored surface reads “REMEMBER ECCL. NOW 12.1. THY CREATOR IN THE DAYS OF THY YOUTH.” The “now” is curved like a rainbow. It was made around 1931.

This “rural people don’t deserve public broadcasting” lie has me looking to the Douglas Adams postcard. Radio Hitchhiker’s gave me such rare delight and wonder as an isolated Appalachian teenager. I never expected him to reply to my fan mail! That, and how, he did is still helpful.

Four Shoney’s/Bob’s Big Boy statues in red and white checkered overalls. Each one’s left hand is hooked on his gallus strap, right hand holding up a burger about the size of his head (burger and head sizes, along with paint jobs, vary). Two smaller Betty Boops offer menus, maybe? Hard to tell at this scale.

Congratulations this Confederate Surrender Day to my great-great-grandfather, a Virginian who had crossed the line and joined the 13th Reg. Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A.
Later and hand-tinted copy of a photograph of a white man in his early twenties, wearing a dark blue Union uniform. Three stripes on the collar and buttons down the jacket front have been highlighted in gold paint. His mustache is a thick dark crescent, his hair also thick and temporarily ruly under whatever pomade or bear grease restrains it.

thrifted my superb owl
Ceramic cookie jar shaped like an owl, with a smaller owl perched on its head. Yellow and orange daisies sprout unaccountably from the large owl’s chest and the small owl’s feet. It could only be more 1970s if it were macrame.

Lemon with what were, a month ago on New Year’s Eve, perky piglet ears cut from its peel, cloves for eyes, and a curly aluminum foil tail. It has hardened, its brow furrowed, its lips drawn back so the head of the dime in its mouth looks even more severed. Lemon Pig, what big pores you have!
