if people are too afraid to say anything more than what's safe, they might avoid saying anything at all. it's a feedback loop where people want to leave comments but only do so with people they are already comfortable with (imo)

another thing worth pointing out is unless I know someone well enough I can't really make any comments more personal than "good art!" or "wow!".
