In 1948-1952 the interior of the WH was completely gutted by Truman as it was deemed structurally unsound. The EW was not structurally unsound but it was long far short of functional requirement for WH events. Nowhere near the worst thing the Don has done.

People don’t realize that the WH itself was completely gutted from 1948-1952. Harry Truman made the call because the building was structurally dangerous. He did so a year before he had congressional funding and approval. The WH has always been in a kind of legal limbo…like the Don’s EW demo.

They are not enlarged state dinners. Today the 650-1,000 capacity is met with large temporary tents erected on the WH South Lawn 6-10 times a year. The tent dinners there are much more expensive because the tents are the big cost…and they will no longer be necessary.

The WH was gutted by Truman in 1949 a year before congressional approval and building permit. Classical inherently restrained architecture was chosen by Jefferson..WH events today are from 650-900 far less than 200 of the EW which was grossly inadequate. Any other questions?

Tacky is what we have today, where 6-10 times a year tents are erected on the WH lawn. Even the larger SBR will be completely off the lawn on the east side…and be harmonious classic style of the WH. Where’s the beef?

Harry Truman literally gutted the entire WH on the advice of engineers in 1948 a year before congressional approval. There was even support for knocking down the exterior walls… but Truman stepped in to stop it.
