As someone who works in food prep. When we're 200g short on black pepper for a recipe. It's not a matter of "oh fuck it just short it" we send a bloke on an hour long drive on company time to buy super market priced black pepper to fill the recipe. Rushing bulk orders for a singe items happens.

I feel like this is just culturally American. Even basic human needs are commodities which need to be earned, bought or traded.
