Ridiculous answer. This is grade school level math that you plug into your phone's calculator or just ask Google to do the division. It's because reporters don't even think to add this type of meaningful context.

Jean Twenge in her Generations book summed it up for Gen X: their formative years were in the Reagan 1980s which “influenced them for the long haul” to accept a default right-wing narrative.

I highly suggest you read Jean Twenge’s book on Generations. Her explanation is much more straightforward, that Gen X had their formative years during the Reagan years of the 80s. That seems to have, “influenced them for the long haul” as she writes into accepting a default right wing narrative.

I’m a Gen X liberal man so this is terribly discouraging. I think Jean Twenge in her Generations book wrote this is due to Gen X being propagandized by the Reagan years which kept them locked into a right-wing narrative.
