The horizontal rain of the typhoons I experienced in Tokyo was disorienting and somehow entertaining out on the street, umbrella held parallel to the ground. Inside, the traditionally designed guesthouse I lived in shimmied and shook throughout. It didn’t break, but it was an unnerving ride.
