I enjoyed The Immortal Irishman by Timothy Egan recently. It's about a guy who worked for Irish independence in the 1840s, then was a political prisoner in Tasmania, then became a US Civil War general, then became the provisional governor of Montana, then died mysteriously at age 43. Great book.
