“More than half the river basins in the western US are facing real challenges & might arguably be in a state of bankruptcy where we’re consuming more water than is physically available.” Brian Richter

Brilliant Arizona desert sunrise this morning, following a brief but intense 4am thunderstorm.

Update: We’re due for some good monsoon rains in coming days, with corresponding flood and debris flow warnings for trails and drainages throughout the Grand Canyon all the way down to the Colorado River. Hopefully rain will help with fire suppression, but worries about water contamination as well.

Mind-blowing: the Grand Canyon has a single primary water source: a fragile spring near the bottom of the canyon. Water has to be pumped up ~3K feet to the rim and gets around via an old system of "creative" pipes. Photos via the National Park Service.

I mean, look at this place!

For my fellow geology nerds. This aquifer (the Red Wall) that is perched 3K feet down from the top of the Colorado Plateau comes out as a spring near where I live at 4K feet. They have to drill through basically all the geologic layers of the Grand Canyon and down here it just kinda comes out.

There's a lot of news about Arizona's groundwater challenges, but Northern Arizona is in a different boat for many reasons, including a perched aquifer that has to be pumped from 3,000 feet through a massive volcanic field. Still, residents are concerned azwaterinnovation.asu.edu/northern-ari...

Speaking for everyone, I guess? Had no idea this is what I was doing.

So…community engagement arose because some “audiences” don’t have “capacity, motivation, and opportunity?” It’s just deficit all the way down I guess.
July 18, 2025 at 8:46 PM
So…practitioner knowledge is “intuition” or belief, communicators are “stakeholders,” and surely any reliance on their own knowledge and experience is a “practical indifference” to research.

First, the biggest truth. Always keep your friends the closest. Always.

There are now two active fires near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon near the Arizona - Utah border. The White Sage fire is over 40k acres at this point having grown quickly, and the Dragon Bravo is 5k acres. #WhiteSageFire #DragonBravoFire

Well, things are bad, but at least monsoon season has officially begun. We need the rain, badly.

Some days, it’s just nice to remember that science is kinda cool and that many of the people doing it are dedicated to making sure what they do is useful. Fun to write about a colleague who builds custom equipment to measure desert ag water use azwaterinnovation.asu.edu/measuring-wa...

I'm low key obsessed with this topic right now because salt accumulation has been an issue for humans for a very long time. In this case, I got to include mention of the salt mines that exist in my hometown, which ultimately end up downstream in the Phoenix area via the Verde and Salt rivers.

It’s a March miracle here in northern Arizona with our first snows of the winter and good rains. Sorry Spring Breakers, but the state has been barely drivable for two days.
