That’s why you leave the USA using your UK passport. If you check in using your US passport for a flight to the UK, of course they don’t know you’re a dual citizen. You should use the passport of the country you are heading to. Always.

I was being nice. You’re omitting something. You got fined and given advance parole to enter the USA. That means you misled them in some way. Unintentionally, I’m sure. Hundreds of dual citizens per day go between the US and the UK without issue, using both passports.

Something doesn’t add up. I just visited the UK for the weekend from USA. Used my Irish passport to exit USA/Enter UK and my American Passport to come back. Simple. I don’t know what you did, but there’s more you’re forgetting to this story.

That’s completely wrong. You don’t need an ETA if you’re a dual citizen.

It’s not just Americans. It’s citizens of any country that has demonstrated a lack of responsibility on a scale so grand that they cannot be trusted and need to be carefully tracked.
