Mostly here to yell about The Terror & other cold boys
There she is!!! Most famous character in the film, the loveliest, the most beautiful, our darling. Such lines! Such hull! So proudly stuck in the ice!!

Oh what I wouldn’t give to have stepped onto that set of the ship.

Whiteout downloading anything new, where are you mentally?

Sea feeding! His name is Pumpkin and he has Opinions on his Food! He got a private chartered jet to the Sanctuary and they think it went to his head 😂

I went to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary recently and I have many many pictures!!! My fun fact about seals is they have flesh eating bacteria in their mouths and they are very stressy babies so must be handled with care (as they should be)

Day 8: Chesters to Robin Hood Inn (East Wallhouses)

The (North) Tyne! What a way to start the morning (yes I know we technically saw it a bit in the backyard of Chesters Roman fort but not like this! What a river!!

Anyway it’s been a long day, we’re staying in the cutest B&B (someone’s home!) which has a bath, everyone move out of Leo’s way, some desperate foot soaking needs to happen.

As always, we’re still hocking for Parkinson’s UK as we walk www.justgiving.com/page/bilbo-b...

Anyway I don’t think I can impart how insane this museum was, I’m sure it’s not all that’s there but it was more collection room from things from all over this bit (Steel Rigg to here) of Hadrians Wall. Forts, milecastles, turrets etc.

Would one day love to see it in a more modern, narrative museum

Imagine inheriting this place (still in private ownership but not the Clayton family) and being like I’m gonna become so hyperfixated on the ruins in my backyard. Everyone needs a hobby right?
And it was John Clayton’s descendent who donated it all to the nation so he definitely imparted his love

The bathhouse at Chesters, the most complete found in Britain. Built right next to the river (where do you think the waste went 💀)((this was not the source of their fresh water))

I got so excited looking at all the drainage. Can you imagine a future where people will get excited for our drains?
April 16, 2025 at 6:44 AM
Ok I know I’m soooooo late, I got a little tired 😔 But I’m back! And I promise to finish

Here we have the fort at Chesters! This one was excavated in the 1800s much before we have our modern day archeological standards. Meaning sometimes they put things where they thought they went or “fixed it”

Desperate to know what this brick(?)/stone wall was before it was taken over by the trees.
April 10, 2025 at 6:51 AM
Temple of Mithras at Carrawburgh! This was for the cult of Mithras and would have been underground in Roman times. A cult only for men, and extremely hierarchical, (top level man was called “Father” apparently)so unsurprisingly did well in the army. You can also go see a temple for free in London.

Slightly different views now we’re off the Craggs in Northumberland. However just as beautiful.

“We have lost Iost Sir John! (The wall)”

Nah there’s probably a lot under Bilbo bear and Samwise sheep but it’s not been excavated … doesn’t quite look as impressive like this but it’s still very cool to see I promise!

Land it was on and rebuilding a lot of it which had been robbed out probably by the Jacobean army to build a road from Newcastle to Carlisle. He had got very interested in the Romans, excavated Chester’s in his backyard and persuaded his friends and himself to buy a lot of the land the wall was on
April 10, 2025 at 6:36 AM
Can you see the wall snaking behind us in the background and then again in front? We’ve walking that path!

Interestingly this part of the wall we walked yesterday on the loop and this morning is also referred to Clayton’s Wall. As in the C19th a rich landowner preserved the wall by buying all the

Day 7: Housesteds to Chesters

Well. First day that hasn’t started with sun! (It should burn off just after lunch though)
April 9, 2025 at 8:11 AM
Anyway, last photos from today… last last photo is of sycamore gap. You can sort of see why photographers were drawn to the area, and it’s such a shame that such an old tree is gone. But really it was just a tree, iconic yes but interesting in itself? Not sure about that
April 8, 2025 at 9:18 PM
Like you forget looking at these stones that the longest side is inwards into the wall and really it was super stable and has just. Lasted. For us to wander on past. Ridiculous really when you think about it. Brilliant.
April 8, 2025 at 9:15 PM
Even at Housesteds (another fantastic fort) they were saying that it wasn’t until the Jacobites that the final big robbing took place to build a road and that before then the Wall was just there for over a Millenia…
April 8, 2025 at 9:13 PM
I have so many fun facts now. Like did you know that for centuries after the Romans “left” there were people living in and around the buildings? That after a while they were just left there and we have records till industrial times of buildings/walls buried when even more robbing of stone took place
April 8, 2025 at 9:11 PM
Day 6: pause for a circular to Vindolanda to Housesteds and back via sycamore gap

We pause from the regularly scheduled posting for: VINDOLANDA AAAAAhhhhh fuck I could spend way way more time here

Tonight we ended with some stargazing. Cannot recommend enough, the guy we had was super quick to position the telescopes and super knowledgable. We had a great time, especially looking a Jupiter with its 4 (visible) moons!?! Unfortunately no pictures, but we did get one of the moon!
April 8, 2025 at 9:01 PM
What do you mean I’m am Homosexual, I’m carrying round two tiny soft toys to take pictures of them along a 80 mile hike. I thought that was obvious (as did Bilbo bear and Samwise Sheep)
April 8, 2025 at 8:58 PM
Ok that’s enough. It’s wall time (again):
