A lovely Sternbergia lutea, the Winter Daffodil teases at Spring.

Fence is up and 12 year old Blackberry trees are planted. Temporary panels covering the entrances until doors are made.
An evenly colored overcast sky. Pines, maples, and poplars line the horizon. The lower half of the image consists of a field with a fence enclosing a large area. Small mammal hardware cloth being installed at the bottom of the fence, welded wire makes up the main fencing material. The corner posts are braced with two smaller posts each. Seven 12 year old Blueberry trees planted in raised mounds on a fenced in field.

Well we don’t recommend that.
A glass of red wine is in the foreground on an oak table. Out of focus behind it is a red clay mug with a heart shape evident where the glaze was blocked when it was made.

If Mud Pies were popular at the farmers market we would be ready to harvest.
Heavily overcast sky with very defined cloud formations of varying shades. Very gothic. Pines, maples, and poplars line the horizon. The lower half of the image consists of a field with flooded areas mirroring the sky. A half built fence is beginning to take shape, with a small mammal hardware cloth being installed at the bottom of the fence, and a good deal of posts have been made straight.

The sheer amount of work needed to make holes in glacial till cannot be underestimated. Even with a tractor and a posthole digger, 89 holes and the raising of the poles proved a formidable challenge.

This dormant Forsythia × intermedia (maybe) has decided to mark the Winter Solstice with a beautiful rebellious bloom.

In calculating the area of our irregular food forest, I used Heron’s equation to calculate the area of the oblique triangle. Always humbling to realize discoveries like this were invented so long ago. Heron’s was discovered circa 62 C.E.

The equations first calculate the hypotenuse of the right triangle, then its area. Then the equations address the second oblique triangle, they use Heron’s equation since all side lengths are known. First the semi-perimeter is calculated then the area.

Using our laser pointer to make sure the future food forest is in alignment with the universe.

First Winter frost,
beautiful and lethal ~

Late winter harvest. Managed to get some lovely Fava beans and plenty of horseradish for sauces and preserves.
