I was at the park this evening at just the right time! This is straight off the camera roll, no filter or adjustments. I was tempted to increase the exposure of his face a bit but decided the shot was perfect just the way it was without me monkeying around and ruining it.

18 months. The most fun dog to work with I’ve ever raised; I’ve had dogs that were wide open crazy, dogs that were smart, and dogs that were eager to learn and work cooperatively, but never really all of those things in the same package before.

Cribroheros rostratus. I have three in my 180 gallon tank that I’ve raised since they were a couple of inches long. They coexist well with the other three cichlids in the tank, at least so far.

Spiny Oak Slug Moth (Euclea delphinii) that was under my porch light last night. I had never seen one of these beauties before! Their larvae, like other slug caterpillars, have venomous spines and can inflict painful stings to defend themselves.

Today was Ziggy’s ninth birthday. He started the day by chasing three deer off the lawn into the woods, which was probably the best burger present ever. Later on he and Leeloo went to Petsmart and a park. He also got a couple of new toys.

Two bottomless pits, waiting with anticipation for food any time I come near.

I haven’t seen it happen, but I’m pretty sure these troublemakers are also systematically removing all other fish in this 75gal tank other than bottom feeders.

Ishi was a wild cat, trapped from a feral colony and terrified of humans. It’s taken her many years to work up to this level of trust, and I feel honored that she’s now about 98% relaxed in my lap - though she’s still keeping one eye and ear on alert, just in case.

Ursa and I stopped at the park after our agility class this morning, and when I saw the yellow flowers, I remembered the picture I had taken of him in those flowers when he was little almost exactly a year ago so I took a new one for comparison. He grew into his ears lol.

I inadvertently disturbed this beautiful little skink when I had to move a woodpile and I felt really bad for wrecking their hiding place. I carefully scooped them up in a handful of the leaf matter and placed in a crevice under the relocated logs.

The dog walk obstacle is almost done! I found a good solution for the sand problem: aquarium sand! It’s much more uniform, less dusty, and doesn’t have sharp edges. Also the coat of paint the sand goes over needs to be really thick, like ‘spreading honey on bread’ thick.

I didn’t get squished, but I’m very sore today. There was one point where it looked like both me and the agility A-frame were going to end up down in the ravine at the bottom of the hill, joining my poor shed that was washed down the hill by a landslide during Hurricane Helene.
