According to my friend: Godzilla symbolizes nuclear destruction, and the idea that you fight destruction with something bigger and more destructive is a very Western one. Peace combats destruction. Mothra represents peace and the natural world, and thus the capacity to heal from nuclear devastation.

Don’t pay the proposed cost if you don’t want to or can’t. I get that. It’s hard out here for everyone. That is very true.

But it is also true that other people are not obligated to absorb the costs of entertaining you. Please engage in some perspective-taking. It’ll make your life much easier.

All of that, and you’re easily below the proposed minimum wage that everyone knows was proposed so long ago that even if it passed, it would no longer be adequate. Even moreso if it’s an in-person game and all these assets need to be physical.

$20 a session is a STEAL.

Except that doesn’t factor in the resources a DM needs. Books, for one. And any pro DM running more than maybe two games is gonna need to pay for a VTT subscription. Plus the upfront cost of a computer that can handle running that VTT along with a video chat and some sort of music streaming.

Because that doesn’t factor in prep time. I find that most good DMs who I talk to can get themselves to a point where an hour of game time equals about an hour of prep time. Meaning that 3 hours of labor is actually six.

So now we are down to barely over $15 an hour.

Let’s break this down. Say you are going to run a game for 5 players, and each session is going to last…let’s be conservative and call it three hours. At $20 a head, that’s gonna land you at $100 for three hours of labor. So just over $33 an hour.

That does sound high, right?

Think harder.

2024 was a MAJOR object lesson in this, let me tell you.

I’d never thought about it, but they never produce smoke or muzzle flashes, so the propulsion source can’t be black powder or something similar. So I wondered…what is it?

Well, according to Wookiepedia, it’s a device called a “magnetic pulse accelerator.”

THEY’RE USING FUCKING RAILGUNS.

Humanity can’t make our brains work a certain way. But we CAN make our environment better for a wider spectrum of brains. When context is everything, we need to dedicate everything to context.

If you care? Do the work.

But not all of us like talking about it. And in many cases, not all of us feel safe to do so. In which case, do your research. Learn the generalities and try to keep them in mind. You will never know a person’s whole story. But starting with compassion helps make up for that a lot.

Second, if you’re a person who cares about this, work to understand the conditions and needs of your neuroatypical peers. That might be as simple as asking. Plenty of us love to talk about our lived experiences and help people to understand how our minds work, and what accommodations help.

One of my autistic friends struggles a lot with social awareness, but has an incredible mind for numbers and practical, concrete thinking. He now works as an engineer where he doesn’t have to socialize much, and is so good at his job that he can provide for his whole family all on his own.

So what does one do about this? Well, a few things.

First, if you are a neurodivergent person, one of the kindest things you can do for yourself is find an environment where your traits allow you to be successful.

So, when we say “neurotypical,” what we ultimately mean is “ideally mentally adapted to the current world.” Much of said world is quite hostile to autistic people, or others with sensory issues. Our approach to education, at least in the US, is hostile to people with ADHD. The list goes on.
