Maybe he could've chosen better words, but to me this is pure juxtaposition, helping describe how Carrie's mother has warped her world view-theres nothing 'evil' or 'bad' with what carrie is seeing, but that's what carrie perceives. That said, yes, it's an uncomfortable description.

King writes horror, and often his narrative is coming from the viewpoint of the antagonist. I've read a fair bit of King, and while there are certainly uncomfortable sections, that kinda comes with the territory.

That said, one of the things I won't defend is the IT sequence. That was gross.
