Some new lifers along the very full LA river today! This Townsend’s warbler was gleaning for insects, and I was excited to spot 2-3 Bonaparte’s Gull (juvenile/nonbreeding) in the river.

• Sepulveda Basin •
A soggy male kestrel at the basin today.
I’m thrilled about the return of the kestrels, meadowlarks, kingfishers, pelicans, and white-crowned sparrows!
Songbirds were very active and vocal in the rain.

I worked as a docent at our Museum of Nat History when I was in college and got to run a few animal ID workshops with K-5 students. Teaching them about kingfishers was so much fun - love this bird!

Nice to get a prolonged look at a female VEFL! I’ve seen juvie and adult males around infrequently. That peachy wash on the rump is really distinctive in person.

Greater Yellowlegs spotted down on the LA River, near the Haskell Creek footbridge. Their size was really impressive - comparatively they towered over the nearby killdeer and sandpipers.

I think flycatchers have to be near the top of my list for favorite birds to sit and observe. This vermilion flycatcher was nicely colored up and loving the morning sun.

• Himantopus mexicanus •
• Bette Davis Picnic Area & LA River •
First time getting down to the river proper at this location, there were a handful of shorebird species all over this stretch of the narrows!

Being sick for a month takes its toll, happy to be healthy again! Here’s a beautiful female Belted Kingfisher that I saw this weekend at Sepulveda. Loving this fall weather!

Clouds kept the temps down this morning and brought out some friendly critters along the trail. Added the Orange-crowned warbler as bird lifer #218, #337 overall!

• Accipiter cooperii •
• Oakland Co., MI •
A juvenile Cooper’s hawk was camped out on the front lawn with a fresh kill and a parent watching, before bringing the meal to a telephone pole to clean + eat. Gnarly!

Saw a few Sandhills and a Green Heron on my drive out, and I added a new lifer, the Pileated Woodpecker! Stabilized the video for (I hope) a better look!

It was a treat seeing red-eyed vireos noisily feeding in the lower cedar branches in the evenings - they can be so hard to spot in the forest during the day!

Of the species that I saw regularly on the point, I was amazed by the brilliant coloring on the Cape May Warbler. ‘Tigrina’, indeed!
